Shelly O’Boyle became interim superintendent this month.
WESTFIELD — Seven months after retiring from the position of Superintendent in the Frewsburg School District, Shelly O’Boyle felt she had more to give and that Westfield Academy and Central School was the place to do it.
“I began to realize that I missed education, specifically, affecting change for children,” O’Boyle said. “It was at this point the Interim position in Westfield materialized. Knowing the history of excellence of Westfield, I quickly realized that I wanted to assist the Westfield District during their time of change.”
O’Boyle assumed the position of interim superintendent at WACS on Feb. 1 and will serve until approximately July 31. She fills the position left vacant by WACS superintendent Michael Cipolla who assumed the position of superintendent for the Randolph Academy.
O’Boyle said that as soon as she arrived at WACS, she experienced an atmosphere of community. “From the warm smiles in the office to the vibrant artwork lining the hallways, it’s clear this is a place where students are nurtured and valued,” she said. “There’s a real sense of community here, a genuine connection between teachers, students and families, with a very supportive noninstructional staff. I am already excited to be a part of this.”
O’Boyle said her priority will be to maintain the high standards of the district and keep things running smoothly. “My priority during this time of transition is to ensure the continued smooth operation of our schools and maintain the focus on providing our students with an excellent education,” she said. “I am committed to working collaboratively with our dedicated staff, engaged parents, and supportive community to uphold the high standards we have for our children’s success.”
O’Boyle arrives at WACS just as the district is undertaking a $23.5 Capital Project and she is excited to be a part of it. “I’m fortunate to join this district at a time when the Capital Improvement Project is underway,” she said. “A capable team has already laid the groundwork and is diligently working on this process. My role will be to provide support and oversight, ensuring the project stays on track.”
Prior to coming to WACS, O’Boyle spent 25 years in various leadership positions, including seven years as Superintendent in the Frewsburg District, retiring in March, 2024.
O’Boyle began her career in education in 1996 when she was hired as a teacher of speech and hearing handicapped for the Jamestown Public School District. In 1999, she was appointed as the special education department chairperson/district committee on preschool education and was subsequently named coordinator of special education in 2002.
In 2004, O’Boyle was appointed as assistant elementary principal at Southwestern Central School District, and in 2007, she became elementary school principal. In 2009, she became the director of curriculum and instruction, and in 2015 was also named the director of technology integration.
O’Boyle lives in Kiantone with her husband, Tim, with whom she has been married for 32 years. She has two daughters, Olivia, who lives in North Carolina, and Andrea, who is currently moving to Bemus Point from Buffalo.
Although she has no plans to apply for the superintendent position at WACS, O’Boyle said she has nothing but admiration for the district. “From the students’ enthusiasm to the faculty’s commitment and the staff’s support, it’s evident that everyone here cares deeply about this district,” she said. “It’s a truly nurturing and caring environment.”
