The Back Nine owner Austin Wright and his wife Addie flank their son Micah at the Chandler business.
Austin Wright says he’s been playing golf all his life. He wanted to buy a golf simulator for his home, but there was one little problem: His wife Addie.
“His first idea of doing it in our house, and I was like, absolutely not,” Addie said.
Instead of one golf simulator, Austin now owns three and has started his own business called The Back Nine at 2580 W. Chandler Blvd., Chandler.
“He came to me and said ‘I found this franchise, let’s buy a franchise.’ I was like no. Then, he set up a meeting with the franchise owners regardless and, honestly, then I started to get more and more, ‘OK, let’s see what this is about.’”
Austin said golfers are going to love coming to The Back Nine because he uses Trackman machines.
“Trackman is definitely the most accurate and it’s what the PGA partners with, so it’s the best of the best,” Austin said.
His location is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Members can book a time and even if it’s 3 a.m., Austin said they’ll get a code on their phone that will open the door so they can work on their game.
“The whole thing if fully automated,” Austin said. “I love golf and this seems like a fun and exciting opportunity to bring indoor golf to the Chandler community.”
Addie grew up in Chandler, graduating from Corona del Sol High School. Both she and Austin earned their master’s degrees and decided they wanted to start their own business.
The grand opening of their business was May 4. They had a soft opening on April 20.
“It’s been going good, we got 17 signups for memberships, so everyone’s very excited,” Austin said.
There are four levels of memberships available, starting a $99 a month and going to $349 per month.
The single plan allows members 24/7 access and to play for up to one hour in one of the three bays. They cannot bring any guests. Golfers can choose from hundreds of courses to play, including many of the famous ones, such as Pebble Beach or Spyglass. However, they cannot choose Augusta, because that course requires hefty licensing fees.
The next plan is called Par and costs $150 per month. It allows members to bring one guest and to play up to two hours. The Birdie plan is $199 a month and allows up to three guests and three hours of use on the machines.
The top plan is called Eagle and it allows members to bring three guests and to play for up to three hours, using two of the bays instead of just one.
There are other benefits for the top two membership plans that relate to tournaments.
The Back Nine is opening up just as the days are getting warmer in the Valley. Austin said that’s a happy coincidence.
“People work all day, they can’t go play 18 holes after work, but now they can,” Austin said. “They can come here at any time of the day, and especially in the summer, we think it could, hopefully, blow up just because people don’t want to play in 120 degrees.”
The space is available for corporate events as well. Each bay comes with Fubo TV, so golfers can watch their favorite sporting events while they golf. There’s also a putting green in the back of the facility.
Austin’s desire for a golf simulator in his home has led to this business venture.
“The hardest part was convincing my wife to do this,” Austin said.
