MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. dedicated his life to fighting for equality, human rights, and service. This MLK day, Memphis honored his life and legacy across the city.
The Memphis Grizzlies battled it out with the Minnesota Timberwolves this MLK day; prior to tipoff, they presented three honorees with the National Civil Rights Museum Sports Legacy Award.
“He no longer lives, but his legacy does,” said Tommy Smith, one of the honorees. Each year MLK day in Memphis includes the Grizzlies. But the game also featured a tribute to the fight for civil rights that continues. This year included three legendary athletes.
1968 Olympic Track and Field gold medalist Tommy Smith, basketball Hall of Famer and Olympic gold medalist Cheryl Miller, and six time NBA All-Star Amar’e Stoudemire now have another accolade: the National Civil Rights Museum Sports Legacy Award. Smith, known for his black power salute during his medal ceremony at the 1968 games in Mexico City shares how important it is to carry the torch.
“Any time you are representing someone like that, be proud you are alive, because he died for us,” said Smith. Just down the street from the FedExForum, hundreds of people brave the cold to lineup at the National Civil Rights Museum and pay homage to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Organizations continued Dr. King‘s legacy of service. People could get Covid and flu vaccines, give blood, learn to live healthier and enjoy meeting with NFL alumni.
“There are opportunities to be healthier. It is paramount we give back. I know he would be proud of this,” said LenDale White, NFL Alum.
The Grizzlies snagged the win against the Timberwolves.
