In her first major speech since conceding her loss in last month’s election, Vice President Kamala Harris next week will address high school- and college-age students, as well as recent graduates, about “the importance of sustained civic engagement moving forward and the ongoing fight for the future,” sources close to the vice president said.
Those sources see Tuesday’s speech in Prince George’s County, Maryland, and its focus on young leaders to be a continuation of Harris’ broader leadership plans following the election.
Harris has made smaller appearances in recent weeks since losing her presidential bid to Donald Trump, including an appearance earlier this week at the White House Tribal Nations Summitt.
The remarks are expected to focus on the importance of involvement for the purpose of preserving and expanding fundamental freedoms for future generations of Americans. She will reiterate that it has been individual, private citizens who have been at the forefront of every fight for progress throughout American history.
Young leaders played a critical role in Harris’ unsuccessful presidential bid, with her campaign investing heavily in digital ads and social media and working with influencers on platforms such as Instagram, TikTok and YouTube. The campaign had 150 youth and campus organizers to focus specifically on engaging young people in battleground states.
Before she was the nominee, Harris had also embarked on a Fight for Our Freedoms College Tour to engage with young people across the country. Her office has touted that she visited nearly 20 college campuses last year after visiting 14 schools in 2022, in addition to apprentice programs.
