ERIE — After beating a team it had lost to earlier to advance to the District 10 3A championship, Warren’s girls soccer team couldn’t do it again, falling to Harbor Creek 4-0 on Tuesday at Hagerty Family Events Center.
The Huskies scored all four girls early in the first half, including three by Rowan Wolfe, and held the Lady Dragons scoreless between goalies Aubrey McClay and Skylar Grochulski.
“It was a good effort by the girls,” said Warren coach Mark Ordiway, whose Dragons end at 11-9. “They went hard from start to finish. We had a couple defensive miscues early and that cost us. I think we should have been able to keep it closer in the first half. Harbor Creek is a little more polished than we are right now, but we’ll be right back here next year; playing them in the championship. We will use this game to motivate us for next season.”
It was the first time Warren was shut out this season; not a surprise they hadn’t been blanked considering junior Meea Irwin averaged 2.8 goals per match with 54 in 19 games before the title match. She’s Warren’s all-time leading goal scorer already at 118.
Meea added 22 assists this season, and twin sister Leyna Irwin 22 goals and 21 assists.
Down two starters due to injury, the Lady Dragons did have players emerge to lead them into the title game. Warren had won nine of 11 games, including a 2-1 win over Girard in the D10 semifinal (after a 3-1 loss to the Yellowjackets in the regular season).
“It was a successful season in my eyes,” said Ordiway, whose Dragons lost 7-2 to Harbor Creek earlier this season. “We played a tough schedule. All of our losses were to teams that won playoff games, including multiple district champions.”
