Greg Gumbel, a longtime fixture on national sports telecasts and a Loras College graduate, has died at the age of 78.
Gumbel graduated from the Dubuque school in 1967. He played baseball for the Duhawks and is a member of the Loras College Athletics Hall of Fame.
Gumbel was born in New Orleans and grew up in Chicago. His career as a broadcaster included working many of the biggest sports events in the world, including Super Bowls, Final Fours, Daytona 500s and the Olympics.
Gumbel worked for ESPN, NBC and CBS, among others, in a career that spanned five decades.
