‘Garfield’ has claimed victory over ‘Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga’ as the worst Memorial Day release, with an estimated gross of $31.9 million. This is the lowest Memorial Day number one opener since ‘Casper’ debuted at $22.5 million in 1995, including when theaters were closed during the pandemic. ‘Furiosa’ made more than ‘Garfield’ for the 3-day weekend with an estimated $25.6 million versus $24.8 million. Rival studios either present that George Miller’s ‘Furiosa’ is slightly ahead for the long weekend or that the two movies have tied. Neither movies have made a hugely positive impression on audiences, with CinemaScore giving them both a B+. Overall box office sales for the four days plummeted to an estimated $127 million to $130 million, also a 29-year low. ‘Furiosa’, starring Anya Taylor-Joy, was expected to open to $40 million to $45 million during the Memorial Day weekend. ‘Garfield’, with Chris Pratty voicing the titular cat, was financed by Alcon and cost $60 million to produce.
