BEVERLY — Fort Frye’s lead after the first quarter didn’t last long here Thursday evening as short-handed Caldwell left town with a season sweep after saddling the Cadets with a 55-38 setback.
Cadet head coach Eric Henniger’s program, which had won two straight after having a three-game losing skid where they lost by a combined four points, missed 10 of 11 from the floor in the second period and had five of their 20 turnovers.
“We missed a lot of layups in those games, too,” admitted Henniger, whose 3-6 squad was led by Chatum Courson’s 14 points.
“It’s just been kind of our theme this year. The kids try hard. If our offense can catch up to our defense we’d have a lot more wins in the win column.”
Caldwell, which trailed 10-8 after one and led 25-12 at halftime, was led in scoring by Dylan Schott (16) and Brayden Erb (15). Carter Wheeldin added eight markers and grabbed a game-high dozen rebounds.

“We didn’t get to practice yesterday and we went back to school today,” admitted CHS head man Clint Crane, whose team will try to improve to 9-0 on Tuesday at Shadyside. “We had that and we’re missing a kid. One of our better kids (6-foot-3 senior Chaz Pfeffer) is hurt right now. He’ll be back soon, but (Alex) Herlan is out for the season. Chaz will be back soon and he kind of anchors our defense for us, but they picked it up and they got the job done.
“This is obviously not an easy place to play. We need to make free throws (16 of 29). We know that and in general we need to clean some stuff up, but we are winning games by 15 or 20 points and we’re really only playing like two quarters right now. That’s a positive moving forward. We usually don’t do overly well with super physical teams and that’s what they are, but I thought we handled it better than we usually do tonight.”
A pair of free throws from Coen Fouss along with one charity stripe make by Kainan Bradford gave the Cadets the lead after one.
Erb’s steal and layup squared it 1:20 into the second and the Cadets took their final lead at 12-10 soon thereafter via a Terry Tompkins putback. However, the Redskins scored the final 15 points of the half.
Erb knocked down a pair of 3s, Schott had one from distance along with a deuce, while Wheeldin had a putback and Guiler Preston converted twice from the foul line.

Treven Nicholson opened the second half with a putback for the Cadets, who welcome in Shenandoah on Saturday night, but Schott answered with a 3, Erb had a bucket and then Ethan Clark converted a three-point play for a 33-14 lead thanks to a Garrett Brown dime.
Caldwell, which beat the Cadets 53-40 last month, led by as many as 24 late in the third, but a four-point play from Courson and a Clayton Miller hoop helped close the deficit to 41-22 entering the fourth.
The Cadets held a 34-26 edge on the boards with Fouss and Miller grabbing six caroms apiece. Erb and Wheeldin shared game-high steal honors with four each, while Wyatt Duskey had a pair in the setback.
Crock, Brown, Bradford and Cadet teammate Grady Hesson tallied six points each.
“We didn’t have school. They had school, but we didn’t,” added coach Henninger, whose team shot 25.7% (9 of 35) compared to the Redskins’ 44.7% (17 of 38). “We practiced yesterday, but it just comes down to taking care of the ball and making your layups a lot of times.

“When you are constantly missing layups and turning the ball over you are constantly putting your defense in a bind. Our defense has been good this year, but when you are constantly on your heels it’s hard to play.”
