Social Services Minister Amanda Rishworth has rejected claims the government isn't doing enough to secure an exemption to Donald Trump's latest tariffs in a head-to-head clash with Nationals frontbencher Bridget McKenzie.
The pair fronted up for their regular morning television panel on Nine this morning, where they were asked whether Malcolm Turnbull's latest intervention in the debate was helpful.
Rishworth noted Turnbull was not a member of the government and the former PM had a "long history of providing commentary".
"This won't be the first time of the last time he weighs in," she said.
But McKenzie said at the end of the day it's up to the PM to secure the exemption, arguing Anthony Albanese is the sole member of the Quad (a security grouping that includes Australia, India, Japan and the US) to meet one-on-one with Trump.
The frontbenchers talked over one another as Rishworth argued the line of attack from McKenzie was 'disingenuous' as the PM has now had two phone calls with Trump.
"Yeah he's working hard. He's working the phone. Get on a plane," McKenzie fired back.

Russia has told Australia there will be "grave consequences" if it puts "boots on the ground" in Ukraine as part of a Western peacekeeping operation proposed by UK Prime Minister Kier Starmer.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese last week unexpectedly left open the possibility of Australian troops joining a "coalition of the willing" in the war-torn country to enforce any peace deal brokered between Russia and Ukraine.
The Russian embassy in Canberra has now responded to the proposal, warning: "For Australia, joining the so-called coalition of the willing would entail grave consequences."
