RICHMOND — The Edison High School Cheerleading team is boasting another successful season after gaining state championship title.
Head Coach Casey Mozingo and the 10-member non-tumble competition team were recognized during halftime of the EHS boys’ varsity basketball game against Brooke on Thursday after earning titles at the Ohio High School Cheerleading Coaches Association (OHSCCA) state event on Jan. 26 and the Ohio Valley Athletic Conference cheerleading championships earlier this month.
Mozingo said the team performed exceptionally well during the OHSCCA contest at Hilliard Derby High School on Jan. 26 and won another Division IV title at the conclusion.
“The team competed at the OHSCCA state championship competition, winning back-to-back Division IV non-tumble state titles,” Mozingo said. “There were six teams in Division IV and our team also outscored 19 other non-tumble teams to be named grand champions of the non-tumble division. They also had the second highest score of the day out of more than 100 teams at the competition.”
The team followed up that achievement by gaining their fourth consecutive OVAC Non-Tumble Large School championship title on Feb. 1 at WesBanco Arena in Wheeling.
“There were six in that division and they had the fourth highest score of the day out of the 33 teams that competed that weekend in all divisions,” Mozingo said.
She added that the team has gone undefeated this season with first-place finishes at the Claymont and Minerva high schools and back-to-back championships at the East District competition, as well as the accolades they received at OHSCCA and OVAC.
“This team knew starting the season that this was going to be their last year in the non-tumble division since they will be moving into the tumble division next season,” she said. “They set a goal at the beginning of the season to go undefeated and to go out with a bang, and they did just that! We coaches could not be any prouder of this team for all of their hard work, dedication and success.”
Team members include Alli Whitlatch, Maiah Christy, Shay Shannon, Rilee Givens, Kaelyn Myers, Olivia Thomas, Malayna Bright, Jordan Hughes, Alivia Kowalczyk and Addie Pepperling while Hannah Swearingen also serves as coach.
