OKLAHOMA CITY — Attorney General Gentner Drummond has become the first major Oklahoma political figure to throw his hat in the ring for the 2026 gubernatorial race.
Gov. Kevin Stitt will term out in 2026. Drummond has been the state’s AG since 2023, having first run for the statewide office in 2018 when he narrowly lost the Republican primary to Mike Hunter.
Drummond’s announcement came in a campaign email Monday morning. The press release said Drummond made the announcement Monday at the Osage County Fairgrounds in Pawhuska.
“As a tough-on-crime attorney general and decorated fighter pilot, I’ve proven I will always fight for our freedom and defend our values,” Drummond said the release. “Whether it was leading the first U.S. combat mission in the Gulf War, taking on the Biden Administration’s radical overreach, or standing up to Mexican cartels and Chinese crime syndicates, I will never back down from the battles we must fight.”
Drummond has long been considered a front-runner in the next governor’s race, having been publicly at odds in cases involving Stitt and State Superintendent Ryan Walters in areas of public education and state funds.
Drummond has been vocal in his support for stricter immigration laws, the oil and gas industry and repairing tribal relations.
“As Governor, I will keep standing strong with President Trump to secure the border, deport illegal immigrants, and stop the flow of drugs and crime into Oklahoma,” Drummond said. “I’ll fight to lower the tax burden, lower the cost of living, and increase the number of quality jobs.
I want to make Oklahoma the most business-friendly state in the nation and make life better for hardworking families. I will support public education, empower parents, and protect local control.”
Drummond also has taken an interest in Oklahoma’s Open Records and Public Meetings Acts, including crisscrossing the state to host education meetings.
“I believe in complete transparency in government and certainly in my office,” Drummond told the Enid News & Eagle in November.
Most recently, Drummond opposed the National Interest Electric Transmission Corridor, which he called federal overreach and a threat to landowners’ rights.
“Oklahoma deserves leadership that’s tough, courageous, and decisive,” Drummond said in the release. “We don’t need any more career politicians looking for a promotion, and we don’t need someone who bows down to party bosses and special interest groups. I’m running for Governor to serve the People of Oklahoma — not the political elite.”
