MINNEAPOLIS — In its long-awaited return to the state tournament, the Dawson-Boyd boys basketball team enters the Class A quarterfinals as the No. 2 seed when the bracket was announced on Sunday. The Blackjacks will take on No. 7 Heritage Christian Academy in the first round of the tournament on Thursday at 3 p.m. in the Target Center in Minneapolis.
Dawson-Boyd enters the state tournament at 27-3 on the season after winning the Section 3A tournament, while Heritage Christian enters at 24-5 after winning the Section 4A tournament.
The Blackjacks’ lone other state tournament appearance came in 1991. They also qualified for the state tournament as Dawson High School in 1949 before the tournament was separated into separate classes.
The state semifinals and championship will be played at the University of Minnesota’s Williams Arena on Friday and Saturday, while the consolation bracket and third-place game will be played at Concordia-St. Paul’s Gangelhoff Center.
The winner of Dawson-Boyd’s quarterfinal game will take on the winner of No. 3 Red Lake County and No. 6 Goodhue in the semifinals at 2 p.m., while the losers will play in the fifth-place bracket at 2 p.m.
The tournament’s top seed went to Cherry, the reigning state champs who enter this year’s tournament at 29-1. The Tigers’ lone loss came against Red Lake County by a score of 78-77 at Bemidji State University on Feb. 14. Cherry also defeated Dawson-Boyd 70-64 on Dec. 7. The Tigers head into Thursday’s game against No. 8 BOLD (20-10) on a seven-game win streak.
In the other quarterfinal on the left side of the bracket, No. 5 Henning (27-3) takes on No. 4 Nevis (26-4).
The semifinal and consolation matchup on the left side of the bracket are slated for noon.
