WALTON — Music on the Delaware will present an evening in celebration of St. Patrick’s Day on Sunday March 17, with musicians John Potocnik and Kathy Shimberg. The St. Patrick’s Day coffeehouse is free and will take place on the second floor of the Walton Theatre from 6 to 8 p.m.
According to a media release, Sunday’s coffeehouse program will feature mostly Irish and, more broadly, Celtic melodies that have compelled themselves to enter the repertoire of the duo through their beauty and grace. Both performers are multi-instrumentalists, though for Sunday’s concert, Shimberg will be primarily on keyboard and Potocnik on fiddle.
Potocnik started playing old time and Celtic music in the early 70s while studying at Stonybrook University. Occasional trips into NYC to the Irish Arts Center cemented a lifelong love of Irish music and the Irish people. Though he possesses a degree in American Folk culture, Potocnik’s main interest is not the academic aspects of this subject but rather the pure musicality imbedded in American culture and its huge debt to Irish music in particular. Over the years, Potocnik has performed at many venues in Central New York for sessions, contradances and concerts, including at previous Music on the Delaware coffeehouse concerts.
A lifelong musician, Shimberg plays various musical styles and genres on piano and other instruments. Traditional Irish and old-time American music are favorites to listen to, dance to, and play for others to listen and dance to as well. She specializes as a collaborative accompanist in duos and trios, playing over many years socially and for contra and square dances, workshops, classes, in formal and informal concerts, and at community events. She has a degree in American Folk Culture and its historical “ancestry,” specializing in community music, dance, and the informal learning process characteristic of traditional folk culture.
Coffee, tea and desserts will be available. Donations to Music on the Delaware will be accepted.
