CLEVELAND, Ohio – The wrestling, women’s golf and softball programs at Cleveland State University will be discontinued, the university announced after its Board of Trustees meeting on Thursday.
CSU said in a statement that the decision was part of the university’s strategic effort to address budget shortages across departments.
The board also approved the move of CSU’s Esports program from the athletics department to the Washkewicz College of Engineering.
“Over the past several years, one of our primary goals has been to restructure our financial model and to evaluate where our students are engaged academically, socially and competitively,” CSU President Laura Bloomberg said in a statement. “As a result, our athletics department, like many other departments at CSU, has had to make difficult decisions regarding the programs we offer.”
CSU said in a statement that athletes will continue to receive aid while they are students at CSU, and the university will help them with the transition.
“It is a tough day for Cleveland State Athletics,” CSU athletic director Kelsie Gory Harkey said in the statement.
“The student-athletes and coaches in the impacted programs have been an important part of the Cleveland State community, and the decision today is not a reflection of the commitment or passion they, our staff or our alumni have to our program.”
CSU says it has no plans to discontinue any of its remaining 15 athletic programs and is committed to staying an NCAA Division I athletic program.
