NEW ORLEANS — While we’re looking back at 2024, WWL Louisiana political analyst Clancy DuBos looks back at the top political stories of the year.
In this week’s Commentary, he gives us the fastest minute in politics.
There’s never a recession in Louisiana politics. No year proved it more than 2024.
New Governor Jeff Landry took office and made power grabs that rivaled those of Huey Long. He also convinced lawmakers to repeal criminal justice reforms, require posting the 10 Commandments in classrooms, and revise parts of the state tax code. Locally, Landry sent State Police to help make New Orleans safer.
Speaking of public safety, the New Orleans Police Department is closer than ever to getting out of a federal consent decree.
And, Mayor LaToya Cantrell has wandered into the feds’ target zone, even as she continued wandering around the nation and the world.
Looking ahead, New Orleans will soon host the Super Bowl, and come next November, we’ll have a new mayor-elect.
That’s two good reasons to celebrate 2025. Happy New Year.
