CHICAGO – Chicago neighborhood businesses will see new opportunities to grow and serve their communities, thanks to millions of dollars in grant funding.
The initiative focuses on strengthening neighborhoods, with recipients receiving awards to enhance local businesses and address community needs.
What we know:
The grants, ranging from $10,000 to $5 million, were awarded to local entrepreneurs.
Mayor Brandon Johnson praised the winners in a ceremony Wednesday at the Chicago Cultural Center, emphasizing the economic and social impact on neighborhoods, particularly on the South and West Sides.
One significant project includes Blue Azul, a facility in the 17th Ward led by founder Blue Pacheco-Cornejo. The project received $3.7 million to create a space dedicated to mental health, education, fitness, and sports.
Reflecting on the importance of the ward, Pacheco-Cornejo said, "It’ll be in the 17th Ward, where a lot of my childhood friendships, on and off the basketball court were created."
In addition, restaurant owners and caterers will benefit from the $5.7 million Good Food Fund, aimed at making quality food more accessible and supporting food entrepreneurs.
What we don’t know:
Details about the selection process for the grants and the timeline for implementing the funded projects were not disclosed.
What’s next:
Awardees say until now, they’ve been doing emergency repairs themselves. With the grant money, they’ll now be able to fully serve their communities.
