WASHINGTON (TNND) — Radio host and comedian Charlamagne tha God on Monday condemned “liberals” for celebrating the sentencing of President-elect Donald Trump last week.
Trump was sentenced Friday following the felony conviction in his New York hush money case. He received an unconditional discharge, meaning the president-elect will not serve jail time.
Charlamagne, whose legal name is Lenard McKelvey, condemned those on the political left who celebrated the fact the sentencing formally made Trump a felon.
"What a waste of time,” McKelvey said. “Pure political theater.”
“They was never, ever going to convict a former or sitting president of nothing,” he continued. “And what was even more ridiculous was watching liberals celebrate this. Like, this is not a win. Who cares if you can call him a convicted felon when you still gotta call him president for the next four years?"
He also spoke out against Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis for requesting the Georgia Supreme Court reinstate her to Trump’s election interference case.
“They shouldn’t continue to seek the case,” McKelvey said. “It’s a waste of time. They’re not going to do anything to him.”
“Nothing is going to happen,” he added. “What is going to happen? There’s nothing going to happen. It’s just, it’s all political theater. It’s foolishness.”
His comments followed Trump’s post on Truth Social in which he announced he would appeal the sentence.
“As the American People have seen, this ‘case’ had no crime, no damages, no proof, no facts, no Law, only a highly conflicted Judge, a star witness who is a disbarred, disgraced, serial perjurer, and criminal Election Interference,” he wrote. “Today’s event was a despicable charade, and now that it is over, we will appeal this Hoax, which has no merit, and restore the trust of Americans in our once great System of Justice. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”
McKelvey last week condemned former President Barack Obama for “terrible political optics” after he had a conversation with Trump at the funeral of former President Jimmy Carter.
“After you went so hard, you know, calling somebody a threat to democracy and calling somebody a fascist, and now you just, you know, chummy-chummy with the man – you told us he was a threat to democracy,” McKelvey noted. “To me, that’s just terrible political optics.”
“And by the way, I’m a person that’s called him a fascist too, but not because of what Democrats said, but because of what I heard coming out of his mouth,” he added.
McKelvey notably interviewed Trump's former political opponent, Vice President Kamala Harris, during a town hall event in October.
