The Cowboys have had a disappointing season. Receiver CeeDee Lamb has not been disappointing.
Despite missing most of training camp and the preseason due to an entirely avoidable (from the team’s perspective) contract holdout, Lamb has had another highly productive year.
In 14 games, he has 94 catches for 1,089 yards and six touchdowns.
On Sunday, Lamb crossed the 1,000-yard barrier for the fourth straight season. Only one other receiver in franchise history has done that — Michael Irvin.
And with 489 catches, Lamb trails only Michael Thomas (510) for the most receptions in a player’s first five seasons. With 21 more, Lamb will tie Thomas; with 22 more (math is hard), Lamb will hold the all-time record.
Making the accomplishment even more impressive is the missed prep time for the season, since the front office dragged their feet about giving him a fair deal. Before giving him a fair deal. Then there’s the fact that quarterback Dak Prescott has missed six games and counting.
Lamb is currently averaging 6.7 receptions per game. So it’s not crazy to think he can catch Thomas. Especially since the Cowboys are still alive for what would be a very unlikely playoff berth.
However the rest of the season plays out, Lamb is earning his contract. And he’s helping a struggling Cowboys team stay alive for as long as possible in the chase for the postseason.
