PARKERSBURG — Brady Strode and Garrett Bordenkircher each produced a double-double here Friday night to help lead Tyler Consolidated past Parkersburg Catholic, 63-61, in a Little Kanawha Conference showdown.
Strode, who had a game-high 19 points, pulled down 11 rebounds along with Bordenkircher, who finished with 17 markers alongside teammate Brody Giovinazzo.
Strode’s 3 just a few steps across halfcourt that beat the third quarter horn thanks to an Austin Peck assist allowed the Silver Knights of head coach Mark Winters to only trail 48-47 entering the fourth.
Parkesburg Catholic, which slipped to 3-5 and returns to action Tuesday at Hannan, had it even at 56-all with 2:04 to go following a putback by Preston Randolph, who joined teammate Leonardo DeAngelo with 17 counters, but the Silver Knights managed to hold on and improve to 3-2.
Tyler Consolidated, which plays host Saturday afternoon to Ravenswood, hit 18 of 41 (43.9%) compared to the Crusaders’ 22 of 59 (37.3%), but the hosts made just 5 of 23 from deep and lost the rebounding battle, 40-23.

“Coming in we knew they attempted about 30 3s a game,” admitted coach Winters, whose team had 17 turnovers and forced just five. “They want to get a lot of possessions and get a lot of shots up. We really emphasised holding them to one shot and outrebounding them. We always emphasise winning the rebounding battle and holding teams to one shot.
“We did that well tonight. I think early in the second half we went a little too quick offensively and we need to do a better job of slowing down, getting the reversals and trying to execute better.
We got to the line. Three of our five games we’ve got to the line on average about 30 free throws. We want to put pressure on the defense and make the officials make a decision.”
The visitors opened up a 25-17 cushion with 2:47 left in the half when Strode drained a 3 via one of Zayden Hardbarger’s game-high five assists. However, the Crusaders scored the final seven points to close to within one at intermission. Randolph had six of the markers and Carter Nelson converted a foul shot for part of his 11 counters.
After scoring a combined 49 points in the first half, the two teams put up 46 in the third.

DeAngelo and Jayden Walker, who had seven markers, had a three-point play apiece and it was 48-44 PCHS following a putback by Landon Edwards with 27 ticks remaining.
“We just gave them about four or five plays where we didn’t even know who our man was we were guarding and another four or five plays where we did everything right for about 99% of the play and then Tyler beat us to the floor for a loose ball multiple times, so they simply wanted to win that one more than we did,” admitted PCHS boss Jim McLean
“We fouled too much. I think we fouled them 23 times and I guess they only fouled us 14 times. We’ve got to stop fouling as much as the other team I guess. We are so close to taking the next step as a team and they don’t even know it. They just don’t understand the importance of hustle plays 100% of the game and knowing what we are doing at all times of the game.”
Suffice it to say the fourth quarter started off slow as TCHS led 50-48 at the 5:10 mark after Giovinazzo, who had seven caroms, made 3 of 4 from the charity stripe. However, at that point the two teams had combined to miss eight shots and commit six turnovers.
Following the putback by Randolph, which made it 56-all, Bordenkircher’s free throw with 1:45 to go put the visitors ahead for good. Bordenkircher drained 9 of 10 from the line as TCHS finished 21 of 32 compared to the Crusaders’ 12 of 17 showing.

Branson Lott chipped in five points, had a game-high two blocks and led the Crusaders with seven rebounds. Randolph tied Strode for game-high steal honors with a trio apiece.
“I can’t say enough about how we’ve been practicing, especially this week coming off two tough losses at the River City Classic in Marietta,” added coach Winters, whose squad welcomes in Ravenswood on Saturday afternoon. “That was a great event. We just wanted to go down there and challenge ourselves and play some good competition and I think that battle-tested us.
“Our guys just come in everyday ready to compete and go at it. Everyday they are ready to go and they push each other and and make each other better. We’re starting to get deeper into our bench and it’s paying off. Just got to focus on making foul shots and taking care of the basketball early in the game.”
