After 36 minutes of regulation play, the visiting Blue Earth Area Buccaneers and the host St. Clair Cyclones were tied at 59-59 in their boys basketball game.
The Bucs outscored the Cyclones 8-5 in the overtime period to go home with a 67-64 victory.
With the win, the Bucs’ record now stands at 3-2.
BEA was 11-for-31 (35.5 percent) from 2-point range, 9-for-39 (23.1 percent) from 3-point range and 18-for-32 (56.3 percent) from the free-throw line.
St. Clair was 19-for-41 (46.3 percent) from inside the arc, 3-for-14 (21.4 percent) from outside the arc and 17-for-23 (73.9 percent) from the charity stripe.
Other statistics showed the Bucs finishing with 45 rebounds while the Cyclones had 46.
BEA committed 12 turnovers while forcing St. Clair into 22.
Three Bucs reached double figures in scoring led by Will Bromeland with 22 points and followed by Gage Barker with 18 and Branson Hauskins with 16.
Leading the Maroon and Gold in rebounds was Peter Fletcher with nine. Barker finished with eight rebounds, Jacob Grandgenett had seven and Caden Juba had six.
BEA 92, SJA 78
After dropping their previous two games, the Blue Earth Area boys basketball team got back on track with a 92-78 triumph over the St. James Area Saints on Dec. 14, in Blue Earth.
BEA’s Gage Barker opened the scoring with a 3-pointer and the Bucs maintained a lead until St. James produced five consecutive points to turn an 8-4 deficit into a 9-8 lead two and a half minutes into the game.
A basket from behind the arc by the Bucs’ Jacob Grandgenett momentarily put BEA back on top 11-9 before the Saints countered with their own 3-pointer to retake the lead at 12-11.
It was the final lead of the night for St. James Area. A 3-pointer by Sully Dahlberg and three straight drives to the hoop for baskets by Barker had BEA out in front 20-16 with 12:37 remaining in the first half.
The Saints kept the game close and were within two points a number of times. However, the tide turned with 4:26 to play before intermission.
With BEA holding a 28-26 advantage, consecutive 3-pointers by Branson Hauskins, Grandgenett and Will Bromeland and a drive by Barker extended the Bucs’ lead to 39-26 with just over two minutes left in the half.
After the Saints nailed a 3-pointer to break the Bucs’ streak, Grandgenett’s pin-point pass to Hauskins capped off a fast break with an easy basket to give BEA a 41-29 lead.
St. James scored to cut BEA’s lead to 10 points but Hauskins’ shot from behind the arc scorched the net with six seconds showing on the clock and ended the scoring for the first half with BEA in the lead 44-31.
The second half saw the Bucs build their lead to as many as 20 points only to have the Saints pull back within 10 points of the home team with less than three minutes to play.
BEA held their poise, however, and came away with the 92-78 victory to even their record at 2-2 while the Saints fell to 1-3.
The Bucs shot 61.8 percent from 2-point range, making 21 of their 34 shots. They also had a good night shooting from outside the arc where they made 14 of their 24 attempts, or 58.3 percent. BEA went to the charity stripe 15 times and made eight of their attempts for a 53.3 percent success rate.
St. James Area made 52.4 percent of their shots from inside the arc, sinking 22 of their 42 attempts. They attempted 26 3-pointers and made nine, or 34.6 percent. They made half of their free-throw attempts by converting seven of their 14 shots from the charity stripe.
A total of five BEA players reached double figures in scoring. Barker led the Bucs with 29 points. Bromeland, who scored only three points in the first half, finished with 21. Grandgenett and Dahlberg each finished with 15 and Hauskins added 10.
Grandgenett finished with 10 rebounds while Bromeland had eight. Barker and Grandgenett each had six assists.
JCC 76, BEA 60
The host Blue Earth Area Buccaneers fell to the Jackson County Central Huskies 76-60 in a game played on Thursday, Dec. 12.
Shooting woes plagued the Bucs in the first half. Although BEA kept the score close, they were unable to overcome JCC and take the lead and trailed the Huskies 36-32 at the half.
The Bucs kept the game close and tied the contest a couple of times but were unable to take the lead until late in the game.
Unfortunately, BEA could not maintain their shortlived advantage and JCC regained the lead and pulled away for the 16-point victory.
The taller, physical Huskies scored 50 of their points from inside the paint compared to 28 for the Bucs.
JCC made 53.7 from 2-point range, making 29 of their 54 attempts. BEA, on the other hand, shot 39.1 percent from inside the arc. They had 46 attempts and made 18.
BEA made 21.9 percent of their 3-point attempts compared to 8.3 percent for JCC. The Bucs were 7-for-32 from behind the arc while the Huskies made one of 12 3-point attempts.
The Bucs only went to the foul line four times and made three of their attempts (75 percent). Meanwhile, the Huskies attempted 23 free throws and made 15 (65.2 percent).
JCC had a 50-37 advantage in rebounds. Turnovers were fairly even with the Bucs committing 14 and the Huskies having 17.
