GRAFTON — Until early August, the worst injury Kim Meisinger of Bloomin’ Olive probably ever suffered were cuts from rose thorns.
But on Aug. 6, Meisinger, who is the consummate volunteer, was helping with the Grafton Area Chamber of Commerce-run Ladies Night Out, when she stepped backwards, caught her heel on something and fell to the ground.
She did not pick herself up and brush herself off. No, the injuries were so severe that she was taken to the hospital emergency room, and the next day she had the first of three surgeries. She suffered a broken femur with what Meisinger said was a “bad crack.” Doctors put in screws and pins.
Then came a hip replacement, followed by another surgery a few weeks later.
Just as worrisome for Meisinger, though, was her beloved store, Bloomin’ Olive, which she has owned since Oct. 2, 2006. But to say that Meisinger worries might be an exaggeration. Her outlook is as bright as a field of daisies.
“I always say worse things can happen,” Meisinger said.
The hours she put in before her fall seemed to be limitless. Located at 1404 12th Ave., Bloomin’ Olive offers flower arrangements, flower delivery and an always rotating selection of gift items.
Online reviews consistently say how much the flowers are admired by all who see them.

But there was no getting around it, the store needed to be shuttered after Meisinger’s fall. There were orders that needed to be filled and a store full of living flowers that needed tending.
Meisinger said she got help from other florists and the community has been very supportive.
“We really want to thank everybody,” she said. “Everybody’s been wonderful through this whole thing. The support! I just feel like, well, people are wonderful really, and, I mean, I knew that before, but they really are. It’s a wonderful community, and they’ve been very good.”
Meisinger will reopen her store on Monday, Nov. 4. She has been using a walker and is transitioning to a cane, so the hours will be more limited than before.
“We want to break it in slowly,” she said.
Bloomin’ Olive will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays.
