Singer Billy Ray Cyrus has spoken out after facing backlash for his performance at Donald Trump’s second inauguration. The country star was among performers like Carrie Underwood, Village People, and Nelly celebrating Trump‘s White House return.
However, Billy’s set hit a snag with technical glitches. He attempted “Old Town Road” with proper gear, even trying to sing a cappella while querying the crew: “Is my guitar still on? I think they cut me off. I don’t hear my guitar anymore.”
Amid the chaos, he asked the crowd: “Y’all want me to sing more or you just want me to get the h–l off the stage? I don’t give a d–n.”
Billy Ray Cyrus to perform at Donald Trump’s inauguration despite him mocking Miley
The act was labeled a “trainwreck” and “embarrassing” by viewers.
Addressing the criticism, Billy stated: “I wouldn’t have missed the honor of playing this event whether my microphone, guitar and monitors worked or not,” reports the Mirror.Speaking to People, he added: “I was there because President Donald J. Trump invited me.”
Despite the mishaps, he recounted enjoying the Liberty Ball, saying: “I had a ball at the Liberty Ball last night and I’ve learned through all these years when the producer says: ‘You’re on,’ you go entertain the folks even if the equipment goes to hell.”
Unfazed, the singer called the ordeal “rock n roll” and claimed to have had a “blast.”
Carrie Underwood also encountered technical issues when her backing track malfunctioned, compelling her to perform without music.
Last year, the Achy Breaky Heart singer graced the funeral of Corey Comperatore, a man tragically shot and killed at a Donald Trump rally. The 76-year-old newly inagurated President was also injured during the rally when Thomas Matthew Crooks shot him in Pennsylvania.
Billy delivered a heartfelt rendition of the hymn Amazing Grace as well as his own song Some Gave All.
Despite Trump once poking fun at his daughter Miley Cyrus, the singer chose to perform at Trump’s second inauguration. Miley had shown support for Vice President Kamala Harris in the November 2024 election and previously labeled Trump a “racist, sexist, hateful a—–e.”
Last summer, Trump threw shade at Miley at a rally that Billy happened to attend. “Billy Ray Cyrus is here. Where is Billy Ray? He’s around here someplace, and he’s great,” Trump announced at the event.
“He’s a conservative guy. I said, ‘How did you get such a liberal daughter? How had that happened, Billy Ray?'” The once tight-knit father-daughter relationship took a hit when Miley’s mom Trish and Billy ended their marriage. After nearly 30 years of matrimony, it’s reported that Miley sided with her mother.

Their relationship further deteriorated when Billy moved on and wed Australian singer Firerose, who is 25 years his junior.
The romance between Billy and Firerose was short-lived, as they went their separate ways just seven months later following the leak of an audio clip in which he called Miley a “devil” and a “skank.”
By November, it had been reported that any relationship between Miley and Billy was over, with Miley supposedly intending to cut ties with him for good.
