Musicians from ABBA, Radiohead and The Cure have joined actors and authors in signing a protest letter against the mining of their artistry to build artificial intelligence tools.
Thousands of artists signed the letter released Tuesday — the latest public warning about AI tools that can spit out synthetic images, music and writings after being trained on huge troves of human-made works.
“The unlicensed use of creative works for training generative AI is a major, unjust threat to the livelihoods of the people behind those works, and must not be permitted,” says the petition.
Among the signatories are Björn Ulvaeus of the Swedish supergroup ABBA, The Cure's Robert Smith and Thom Yorke and his Radiohead bandmates. Also signing were writers including Nobel-winning novelist Kazuo Ishiguro and actors Julianne Moore, Kevin Bacon and Rosario Dawson.
Bestselling novelist James Patterson signed Tuesday's letter and another open letter last year organized by the Authors Guild, which later brought a lawsuit against AI companies that is still proceeding in a New York federal court.

JoJo found releasing her memoir to be a "really liberating" experience.
The 33-year-old singer – whose real name is Joanna Levesque – released 'Over the Influence' earlier this year, and she's been thrilled by the public's response over recent months.
JoJo told Us Weekly: "It felt really liberating, and I wasn’t sure how it would feel.
"I wasn’t sure how it would be received. But the process of trying to remember different aspects of my life, it’s actually really cathartic and empowering to then realize how much it connects us as people, as opposed to separates us."
The public's response has also helped JoJo to overcome her own "shame".
She said: "In talking about various things that I used to carry a lot of shame about, it actually made me feel more connected to just anybody I meet."
JoJo previously explained that she wrote her memoir in a bid to "make sense" of her music career.
The singer – who released her debut single, 'Leave (Get Out)', back in 2004 – told Access Hollywood: "This year is 20 years since I started in the music industry.
"I put out my first single at 13, and with that big milestone coming up, I wanted to start to make sense of what the hell has been happening in my life."
JoJo feels that her memoir is ultimately a "redemption" story.
She said: "I’m excited for the conversations that I hope will be sparked from my fans and my community reading this book, and also people outside of it.
"I hope that people who don’t know who I am, don’t care about me, read this as well. [It’s] a story about redemption and about pivoting, and about, ‘You think your life is over?’ Or, ‘you think this is the worst thing in the world?’ It’s not over until you give up."

Harvey Weinstein has been diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukaemia.
The 72-year-old former film producer is currently serving a 16-year sentence after being convicted on three counts of sexual assault in a Los Angeles court in 2022 and awaiting a retrial after his 2020 convictions for first degree criminal sexual assault and third degree rape were overturned in April.
As reported by NBC News, he has been receiving treatment at Rikers Island prison for the rare type of bone marrow cancer.
It's said he was rushed to Bellevue Hospital Prison Ward late on Sunday (20.10.24) due to "severe medical conditions".
In 2020, Weinstein, 72, was found guilty of first degree criminal sexual assault and third degree rape based on the testimony of production assistant Miriam Haley and former actress Jessica Mann but the convictions were overturned this year after an appellate court ruled the judge prejudiced the jury by allowing women to testify about sexual harassment and assault allegations that were not part of the case behind heard.
A retrial in the New York case is scheduled to begin in November.
Weinstein has always insisted that any sexual activity was consensual.
In July, he returned to Bellevue to receive treatment for a "myriad" of long-term health conditions after falling ill.
Juda Engelmayer, Weinstein’s spokesman, said in a statement: “Craig Rothfeld, Mr. Weinstein’s authorised representative and prison consultant, confirms that Mr. Weinstein has been brought back to the Bellevue Hospital Prison Ward so that he can be treated for the myriad of health conditions that he is still afflicted with on a daily basis such as diabetes, high blood pressure, spinal stenosis, fluid on his heart and lungs, and various other conditions.
“In addition, Mr. Weinstein tested positive for COVID and contracted double pneumonia in his lungs.
“We continue to express our gratitude to the officers, doctors and nurses at DOCS, CHS, and NYC H+H who saw to it that Mr. Weinstein was immediately transferred to the Bellevue Hospital Prison Ward and will continue working hand in hand with them to ensure Mr. Weinstein receives proper medical treatment.”
He was previously transferred to the hospital in April when he complained of chest pains and spent nine days at the facility – where he had a phone, television, and private bathroom – before being sent back to prison on Rikers Island.

Bill Maher has described his dating as "not age-appropriate".
The 68-year-old star was recently linked to Al Pacino's ex-girlfriend Noor Alfallah after they were spotted on a night out together, but the 30-year-old film producer has insisted they are just friends.
Reflecting on his love life during an appearance 'The Skinny Confidential's Him and Her' podcast, the comedian said he is single and not looking, while he isn't interested in women his own age.
He said: "I'm not looking. I'm good."
He added: "Nothing that I could have predicted when I was your age came to pass.
"Like I would never have imagined that at this age, anyone — and again, like I'll say this just generally — my dating is not age-appropriate."
While he didn't go into specifics, Bill was asked if his romantic interests were ‘perceived in an unorthodox context, younger than what you should be dating?’
He responded: "Not just perceived, they literally are. The people who are p***** off at that, f*** you. You do you, I do me. You do what works for you."
Bill also admitted he doesn't "believe" in marriage for himself, and he has no plans to tie the knot.
He added: "I love to talk about this subject, but it's tough because I also don't really ever want to divulge the details of my own personal life."
Noor recently spoke out to say she isn’t in a relationship with the stand-up and TV host.
She told TMZ about how they are strictly platonic while opening up about co-parenting with her “best friend”, Pacino, after they welcomed Roman into the world in June 2023.
Noor added: “Bill’s my friend – just my friend – Bill’s great though.”

Former President Donald Trump will conduct an interview with Joe Rogan for his popular podcast on Friday.
That’s according to a person familiar with the plans who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity to confirm the interview.
Trump, the Republican presidential nominee, and Rogan have a complicated history. While the two shook hands and spoke briefly at a UFC fight, Trump criticized Rogan after he said that then-candidate Robert Kennedy Jr. was the only one running who made sense to him.
“It will be interesting to see how loudly Joe Rogan gets BOOED the next time he enters the UFC Ring??? MAGA2024,” Trump wrote on his social media site in August.
Rogan later clarified that his comments weren't an endorsement of Kennedy. Kennedy ended up suspending his bid and endorsing Trump.
Both Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic presidential nominee, have appeared on a slew of popular podcasts as Election Day grows closer. Trump’s appearances are typically aimed at young men.

A$AP Rocky is set to go to trial in Los Angeles early next year on charges that he fired a gun at a former friend and collaborator on the streets near a Hollywood hotel in 2021.
The trial of the 36-year-old rapper, fashion mogul, Grammy nominee and celebrity co-chair of the next Met Gala is set to begin with jury selection on Jan. 21. He has pleaded not guilty to two felony counts of assault with a semiautomatic firearm. Trial had been scheduled to start Nov. 12, but his team asked at a hearing Tuesday that it be postponed because he is headlining the Rolling Loud music festival in Thailand next month.
Superior Court Judge Mark S. Arnold said he will allow video cameras to air the trial that's expected to last about two weeks.
“I believe that the public deserves to see what goes on in the courtroom," the judge said.
He asked defense lawyer Joe Tacopina whether Rihanna, with whom Rocky is in a relationship and has two children, plans to attend the trial so he could make proper security accommodations.
Tacopina said he doesn't know, but “I almost guarantee not every day.”
Another judge ruled after a preliminary hearing nearly a year ago that Rocky should stand trial for allegedly firing a gun at Terell Ephron, a childhood friend who testified that their relationship had soured and a feud came to a head on the night of Nov. 6, 2021. Ephron testified that bullets grazed his knuckles.
Rocky could get up to 24 years in prison if convicted on all charges.
Tacopina said outside the courtroom Tuesday that he was confident Rocky would clear his name, and that despite the delay, “He’s eager to get to trial. Having this hanging over his head is not something he wants.”
Rocky was recently selected to be a celebrity chair at the Met Gala in May along with Pharrell Williams, Lewis Hamilton, Colman Domingo and LeBron James, though the result of the trial could complicate his ability to attend.

Dolly Parton dresses up as Granny Claus "every" Christmas.
The 78-year-old country music icon has no plans to stop her yearly tradition of playing the festive character, even if all the children in her family are grown up, and quipped that one day she will be "hobbling" down the chimney.
Speaking to Good Housekeeping UK’s December issue, she said: “I’ll do whatever I can to put a smile on their faces. Every year, I play Granny Claus – I get in my Santa Claus suit and I come down the chimney with my sack full of presents, Even though a lot of the children are grown-up now, they still expect me to do it. One day, I’ll be hobbling in that elevator!”
Christmas hits Dolly's home in November on Thanksgiving and absolutely everything, even her hair, is decorated with lights, with the star admitting she loves to make the inside "tacky".
She said: “These days, my Christmas starts in November. I have my house and my yard decorated, I put a cross on top of the chapel, and on the night of Thanksgiving, I flick the switch and it all goes on. Tourists come round and look at the outside of my house, so for their sake, it’s a bit less tacky out there, but inside I can tacky it up any way I please! I have Christmas trees in all the rooms, everything has lights on – and then we add more lights, and then more lights. I change all the decor up – the dishcloths and the curtains. Oh, and I have Christmas lights in my hair – I have them everywhere. I wear earrings that light up, a reindeer necklace that lights up, I wear sweaters with Christmas lights on – you push a button and I light up!”
When it comes to receiving gifts, Dolly – who is the fourth of 12 children and has teamed up with her sister Rachel Parton George, 65, on the recipe book 'Good Lookin’ Cookin’: A Year Of Meals' – insists she loves receiving costume jewellery, bags and purses.
However, the 'Dolly Parton's Christmas on the Square' star confessed she gets someone else to buy her presents for her sisters, because she doesn't believe she has great "taste".
She said: “Everybody says to me, ‘Oh, I don’t know what to get you – what do you buy somebody who has everything?’ And I say, ‘Well, you get ’em something to put it in!’ I’m the easiest person on Earth to buy for because I love costume jewellery and tote bags and purses. As for my sisters, I usually send somebody out who has better taste than me to make sure they get them the really good stuff.”

Liam Gallagher says Oasis have chosen Richard Ashcroft as the first support act on their reunion tour because the former Verve frontman has "got more talent in his left nostril than all your so called new bands put together".
This week, the 'Bittersweet Symphony' singer was confirmed as the first special guest for the 19 UK and Irish dates of the 'Oasis Live '25' tour.
Since Ashcroft was announced, fans have messaged Liam on X to say that Oasis should give new indie bands an opportunity to play at the sold-out shows, but the 'Supersonic' rocker dismissed the suggestions, insisting there are no new groups who can match the talent of Ashcroft.
Liam posted: “To all the folk who are crying about us not showing love to the young bands and not letting them support there’s LEVELS to this game and I’m afraid 99 [per cent] of ya are way off.”
Responding to a follower who stated that "Oasis could really have made a difference by promoting newer/contemporary band”, Liam posted: "Richard’s got more talent in his left nostril than all your so called new bands put together now stop being an entitled little bumbaseed and show some f****** respect."
When one fan pointed out that Liam let his son Gene Gallagher's band Villanelle open at his solo concerts suggesting his analysis “applies to ur son’s s*** band but they still opened for u didn’t they”, the 52-year-old music legend replied: "It doesn’t actually there the 1 p cent that are mega."
Ashcroft is a long-time friend of Liam and his brother Noel Gallagher, 57, with his former band The Verve often touring with Oasis in the '90s and he is thrilled to have been invited to support them on tour.
The 53-year-old musician said in a statement: "As a fan from day one, I was buzzing for many reasons when the news of Oasis’ return was announced.
“I can say with no exaggeration that the song writing talent of Noel and Liam’s pure spirit as a lead singer helped to inspire me to create some of my best work.
“It was the perfection of ‘Live Forever’ that forced me to try and write my own. They dared to be great, made the dreams we had real and I will always remember those days with joy.
“Now it’s time to create more memories and I’m ready to bring it. See you next summer. Music is power.”
Richard and Liam have become close in the years since Noel quit Oasis in 2009, with Ashcroft supporting the 'Wonderwall' hitmaker at his Finsbury Park outdoor concert in June 2018.
Ashcroft also invited Liam to duet with him on the track 'C'mon People (We're Making It Now)' which features on his 2021 album 'Acoustic Hymns Vol 1'.
The rest of the support line-up for 'Oasis Live '25' is yet to be revealed.
For Oasis' North American dates they will joined by Cage the Elephant.

Ringo Starr believes Taylor Swift's popularity is the "closest thing" to Beatlemania for this generation.
The 84-year-old drummer – who starred in the Beatles alongside John Lennon, Sir Paul McCartney and George Harrison – can see similarities between the fanaticism that surrounded the legendary band and Taylor's loyal fans.
Ringo told American Songwriter: "I think Taylor Swift is great anyway. She’s pulling them in, you know."
Ringo first crossed paths with Taylor at the Grammy Awards when she was 14 years old. The chart-topping star attended the awards show with her mother.
Ringo shared: "When we talk about her, I always have to mention that the first time I met her, she was 14.
"She was at the Grammys with her mother. And then, I saw a photo of her the other day, just yesterday, of her and her mother."
Meanwhile, Sir Paul McCartney previously heaped praise on Taylor, revealing that his song 'Who Cares' was partially inspired by the award-winning pop star.
The 82-year-old singer observed that Taylor, 34, has a very strong connection with her "young fans", describing the bond as a "sort of a sisterly thing".
Speaking about 'Who Cares' – which addresses the dangers of online bullying – Paul told the BBC: "I was actually thinking about Taylor Swift and her relationship to her young fans and how it’s sort of a sisterly thing.
"And I was imagining talking to one of these young fans, and saying: ‘Have you ever been bullied? Do you get bullied?’
"Then, I say: ‘Who cares about the idiots? Who cares about all this? Who cares about you? Well … I do.'"

Kaley Cuoco would "absolutely" reprise her role from 'The Big Bang Theory'.
The 38-year-old actress played Penny Hofstadter during the popular CBS sitcom’s run from 2007 to 2019, and though she has had a number of jobs since, she'd be thrilled if she got the chance to return to her most famous alter ego.
When asked about potentially reprising her role, she told People magazine: “I would absolutely reprise that role.
“100%. I love that character, and I always will.”
Kaley admitted working on the comedy series gave her some of the "best years" of her life and she'll always be grateful to show creator Chuck Lorre.
She said: “I spent 12 years playing that role, and it really set off my career.
“I owe a lot to that character, to that show, to [creator] Chuck Lorre. It was some of the best years of my life, and some of the most fun I’ve ever had.”
Kaley can next be seen in the second series of her Peacock series 'Based on a True Story' and she can't wait for fans to see it.

She told PEOPLE: “We're gonna go way out of order. That’s our plan.

But Kaley insisted she wants to enjoy being a fiancée for a while before planning their nuptials.
She said: “The minute I had my baby, they're like, ‘When's your second one?’ I'm like, ‘Oh my God, is anyone gonna just let me just enjoy this?’"
