STEUBENVILLE — It was a good night for the Big Red wrestling program.
In front of a packed house for the first home dual of the season, the Steubenville matmen won 12 of 13 matches contested against visiting OVAC foe Edison, and in the process scored a commanding 62-9 victory over the Wildcats.
“We wrestled really well,” Big Red head coach Lucas Huffman said. “We’re finally getting everyone into the line up and I thought we looked pretty crisp.
“I tip my hat to Edison, they’re a good program and coach (Luke) Spencer always has scrappy kids. I appreciate them coming down to wrestle us, they’re a young team but they came to scrap with us.”
Big Red wrestlers pinned their way to victories in the first four-straight matches of the night and overall pinned, tech falled or major decisioned for wins in 10 matches.

Monte Guntram (106), Cole Harvey (113), Kasyn Berkey (120), Dorian Haddad (126), Ethan Llewellyn (165), Nolan Blackburn (190) and Beau Hudson (285) were the grapplers in red to win by pin, while Cooper Smith (144) and Brody Saccoccia (157) won by tech fall 17-2 and 21-6, respectively, and Landon Crosier picked up the major decision at 175, 16-5.
Julius Mullins (132) and Karson Simmons (150) were victorious by decision.
“I was impressed up and down our line up,” Huffman said. “I was impressed with Landon Crosier, this was his first match back and he was wrestling a tough kid from Edison (Cole Pittman) and he went out there and put on a show. Brody looked really good, Ethan Llewellyn looked great, up and down the lineup everyone wrestled solid matches.”
Edison’s victory on the mats came via decision from Patton Carr at 138, while Jason Gallagher (215) got the lone forfeit win of the night.
Making it an even better night for the program, on the other side of the Crimson Center floor, the Steubenville High School girls wrestling team also defeated the Wildcats, 27-12 with five pins, and Harding Middle School’s wrestling team dominated Edison Junior High for a clean sweep, 67-0.
REMEMBERING — A Big Red wrestler wears a shirt in honor of late Harding Middle School Wrestler Lizzie Hoover. Wrestlers from Big Red’s boys and girls teams and the Harding team wore the shirts in the first home match of the season Wednesday as they remembered their teammate. – Andrew Grimm
Steubenville City Schools were honoring the late Lizzie Hoover, who died last month. An eighth grader, she was a member of the Harding Middle wrestling squad.
Her teammates wrestled to their victory with her wrestling shoes on the corner of the mat and members of all three Steubenville teams wore special shirts with her picture on them.
The large turnout for both her memory and to support the teams was appreciated by Huffman.
“The crowd came out to support us,” Huffman said. “It was for a good cause in celebration of our young wrestler who passed away. It was a special night for the wrestling programs and Steubenville City Schools
“We love wrestling in front of a crowd like this, the more people we can get in here the better. The fans really came out and made it a good atmosphere.”
