STEUBENVILLE – It would appear that Big Red is starting to hit its stride.
Coach Mike Haney’s group got off to another fast start and never looked back, rolling to a 73-21 victory over visiting Indian Creek inside the Crimson Center Friday night for its fourth-straight victory.
“We’re starting to see it,” Haney said. “They’re getting their basketball legs a little more and their conditioning is getting better. Hopefully we keep it going and keep getting better.”
Big Red jumped out to an 11-2 lead. A Caleb Bodo triple for Creek made it a 13-6 game, but Big Red went on a 13-0 run to end the first quarter and did not slow down much from there.
“We told them our goal tonight was to start right from the tip and get after it,” Haney said. “I thought defensively we played really well and we caused turnovers and shared the ball offense. When you share the ball, the shots fall a lot better.”
After Creek scored the first bucket of the second quarter, Big Red rattled off a 16-2 run. By the middle of the third quarter when the starters left the floor, the Big Red run was 38-4.
“That’s as good as of a team as I’ve coached against,” Indian Creek head coach Joe Dunlevy said of Big Red. “And, I mean team – they play really well together. They’re really well-coached and they played great defense.
“A lot of times coaches will say, ‘Pick your poison.’ Everything was poison against them – if we left a guy open, he made a shot. I just give them credit, they have a really nice team and we wish them well. Coach Haney and his staff are good coaches, great people and they have a really good team.”
The lead built by the starters allowed for Haney to empty the bench, as every player dressed on both teams got minutes.
“It’s always nice to be able to get everybody into the game,” Haney said. “We got those guys a lot of minutes. We’re not always able to do that, so it’s good when we can. I thought the guys off the bench did well and everybody contributed.”
Santino Haney led Steubenville with 15 points. After hitting seven 3s against Aquinas on Tuesday, Tre’von Wiggins netted four more to finish with 14 points, while Will Taylor also tallied 11.
Creek was led by eight points and a pair of 3s from Caleb Bodo.
THANKFUL
While it was a tough night on the court for Dunlevy’s team, the Hall of Fame coach took a moment to share how grateful he was for the outpouring of support he’s gotten away from the court during a recent health situation.
“All of the people have reached out to me during the past year, I can’t say enough how much I appreciate it,” he said. “Former players, guys I’ve coached against, referees, people I teach with, have coached with, our school administration, my friends and my family … so many people I can’t begin to name them all. People putting me on their prayer list, letting me know they’re thinking of me, there are so many.
“I just want them to know how much I appreciate it and that I’m doing good and I love all of you and I appreciate all of the support.”
