STEUBENVILLE – It is no secret that the Big Red boys basketball team can score a lot in a hurry.
That was once again on full display against Weir High in the nightcap of the annual Watt/Nese Classic Friday night.
Steubenville scored the first 14 points of the game and did not look back, rolling to its sixth-straight win and second-consecutive over Weir High in impressive fashion, 82-29.
“The kids came out right from the tip, played good defense, created a lot of turnovers and scored in transition,” Big Red head coach Mike Haney said. “We were passing the ball and getting up and down the floor.
The fast start included six-straight from Santino Haney, who was one of four players for Big Red (6-1) to reach double figures, as he and Tre Wiggins each netted 14, Cole Bowers added 10 and Aiden Davis netted 18 points, a game-high.
“So far it’s been at least three in double digits for us, to have four is a big help,” coach Haney said. “Our rotation of guys are doing a good job.”
After dropping a decision to Big Red Saturday in an event at Franciscan, getting off to the slow start was just too much to overcome right from the get go for Weir (2-3).
“They’re really good, but we didn’t fight,” Weir coach Anthony Santangelo said. “That’s what I’m most disappointed in. We didn’t hustle back, we didn’t get rebounds. But, Big Red is really good, they have nice team chemistry even with some new guys. That’s what we’re trying to teach our guys. You have to be together.
“We just have to learn from it. Getting down 14 that quick is frustrating and hard to get back into it. All of a sudden you turn it over a couple more times and it’s 17 and then 21 … we’ve got another game (Saturday), we’ll try to bounce right back and give it our best shot.”
After the game-starting run, Big Red led 29-7 after one and then Davis netted the first six of the second quarter to pull away further.
Wiggins went on an 8-0 run on his own later in the quarter, hitting two of his three triples to push the lead to 42.
By halftime, it was 62-17 for the home team.
The scoring slowed down a little in the second half, but Big Red had things well at hand.
More impressive to coach Haney than the offense was the defensive effort.
“We’re lucky enough to score some points, we were getting turnovers and and getting the ball head, scoring on layups and getting breakaways,” coach Haney. “The guy who stole it was getting an assist instead of trying to dribble it down to the other end himself, too, so as coaches we’re happy about the way they’re playing, especially on defense.”
Davis was named the game MVP for Big Red, while Weir’s MVP was Anthony Jeffers, who had five points and five rebounds.
Evan Kaczmarek led Weir with six points.
“It’s always great to win in this event,” coach Haney said. “Big shoutout to our athletic director John Arlesic and athletic secretary Becca Boring for all the hard work that goes into this. It’s a great event we’ve been fortunate to be able to have this for 10 years now.
“Coach Arlesic has been here since I think 8 this morning and I don’t think he’s went home, he does a great job.”
