STEUBENVILLE — The Big Red girls basketball team is back in the win column.
After dropping a pair of hard-fought games to some stout competition to start January, Steubenville bounced back with a dominant 48-22 victory over visiting East Liverpool Monday night inside the Crimson Center.
Big Red held the visitors in single digits in all four quarters and used a big first half to take control.
“The girls played a good 32 minutes of basketball, and that’s what we ask them to do,” Big Red head coach Angie Forte said.
The win moves Big Red to 8-5 on the season. Losses to OVAC 5A foes perennial power Wheeling Park at home and John Marshall on the road had ended a six-game win streak, and chances to bounce back were canceled by the weather. Big Red entered the week in fourth place in the 5A standings with a couple of weeks to go before the conference tournament.
“It’s nice to see the girls still have that push in them,” Forte said. “The season is going to have waves, ups and downs, but to be able to try to stay consistent is the key. So for them to come back out in this game and really get after it was good to see.”
As she has all season, Nylah McShan led the way with 18 points and eight rebounds. She was far from alone, though, as Big Red got 12 different players into the game and eight of them added to the scoresheet.
“We tried to build some different combinations on the court together, put some things together, build some chemistry and get some of the young kids some game experience,” Forte said. “We know building depth is going to be important that second half of the season. Every kid touched the floor, every kid gave us some decent minutes and every kid worked hard.
“The key is not just getting on the court just to be out there, but to take advantage of the opportunity while you’re out there. I told them everyone’s number is going to be called, the question was, ‘What are you going to do when your number is called?’ It didn’t have to be points, could be a deflection, rebound, they contributed in a lot of ways.”
Lucy Saccoccia followed McShan’s performance with eight points, while Bailee Beall netted a pair of 3s to finish with six, one more than Cianna Scurry’s five. Five of the eight players to score had a 3-pointer.
After opening a 17-8 lead after the first quarter, Big Red out-scored the Potters 18-3 in the second quarter to lead 35-11 at the break and were able to cruise from there.
East Liverpool (7-9) was led by six points from Kenzi Headly and five from Cate Davis.
