The Red River Wrestling Tournament, featuring teams from 34 different schools, was held in Redwood Falls on Dec. 20-21.
Both local schools, the Blue Earth Area Buccaneers and the Maple River/United South Central Longhorns, competed in the two-day tournament, although not with full squads. The Bucs sent four wrestlers to the tourney while the Longhorns had seven wrestlers compete.
Holdingford won the tournament with 201.5 points. Marshall was the runner-up with 168.5 points and New Ulm Area placed third with 140.5.
MR/USC was 29th with 33 points while BEA was 31st with 16 points.
The Longhorns’ Noah Gonzalez was the only area wrestler to place when he finished in third place at 127 pounds.
Gonzalez won his first match by a 4-0 decision over Presley Havemeier of Dassel-Cokato-Litchfield. Next, he won a close 1-0 decision over Worthington’s Kian Ling.
In the quarterfinals, Gonzalez got by Casey Knettel of Holdingford by a 7-5 decision.
Gonzales lost his semifinal match by a 5-2 decision to the eventual champion, Kane Johnson, of New Ulm Area.
Gonzalez then went to the wrestlebacks where he faced Havemeier again. The MR/USC wrestler prevailed again, winning by a 6-0 decision to send him into the match for third place.
Gonzalez claimed his third place medal when he scored a 7-2 decision over Julio Alejandro of Sibley East.
The Longhorns’ 139-pounder, Waylon Simon, went 2-2 at the tourney. Also going 2-2 were 145-pounder Wyatt Walters, 152-pounder Isaiah Gonzalez, 172-pounder Kolt Bullerman and 215-pounder Dizel Butler. Brayden Mithun, wrestling at 160 pounds, was 0-2.
The Bucs’ 121-pounder, Drake Engelby won two matches and lost two matches.
At 127 pounds, Timmy Nagel finished the tourney with three wins and two losses. The Bucs’ Will Weerts, wrestling at 160 pounds, finished the tourney with a 2-2 record while 285-pounder Chase Gambell won three matches and lost two.
