Former First Lady Michelle Obama announced Tuesday that she will not be attending the inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump.
Former presidents and their families have traditionally attended inaugurations after leaving office with the notable exception of the incoming president. Trump skipped the inauguration of President Joe Biden in 2021, in the aftermath of the Jan. 6 Capitol riot.
The three living former presidents who are not set to be sworn in on Jan. 20 plan to attend the inauguration, as well as Biden, who will be leaving office.
Here are the living former presidents and if they are attending the inauguration of President-elect Trump.
President Joe Biden announced in December that he will be in attendance for the inauguration.
Of course I am,” Biden said in an interview with the Meidas Touch network. “The only president ever to avoid an inauguration is the guy that’s about to be inaugurated.”
Former President Barack Obama is set to attend the inauguration. His wife, former First Lady Michelle Obama, will not, according to an announcement by the Office of Barack and Michelle Obama.
George W. Bush’s office confirmed that the former president and former First Lady Laura Bush will attend Trump’s inauguration.
The Associated Press reported that Bill and Hillary Clinton will attend the inauguration. USA TODAY has reached out to the Clinton Foundation to confirm the report but did not receive an immediate response.
