What leadership traits have served you well? And on the flip side, what have you learned that tends to hold women leaders back?
Exercising good judgment and making sound decisions with the best available information is a guiding principle I follow, even when I don’t have all the answers. It’s also important that a leader is empathic, actively listens, trusts her team, and fosters open communication.
Women sometimes hesitate to take opportunities if they don’t meet every requirement. My advice is to take the opportunities anyway, even if they feel unfamiliar or beyond their current skill set. Often, the best way to grow is to jump in, embrace the challenge, and give it your all.
What are some key strategies to help others achieve a more prominent role in their organization or career?
Say “yes” as often as you reasonably can. This can open doors to new connections and experiences, which you can then parlay into professional growth. Many projects require collaboration across different areas of expertise, and if you build a reputation as a reliable team player who consistently delivers strong results, you’ll have the opportunity to stand out to senior leadership and become a go-to person for future initiatives.
What valuable career lesson or lessons would you like to share with others?
If you’re given opportunities, it’s not luck. It’s because you’ve worked hard, and someone recognizes potential in you, even if you don’t fully see it yet. Block out negativity and believe in yourself. Surround yourself with trusted people you can turn to for honest feedback and guidance.
Learning to delegate strategically is also important. Letting go of the concern that you’re burdening others takes time, but once you see it as offering staff valuable opportunities to learn and showcase their capabilities, everyone benefits.
What is one quote or phrase you refer to when you need inspiration?
“No one can whistle a symphony. It takes a whole orchestra to play it.” — H.E. Luccock
