The merging of its corporate teams at Amazon Fresh and Amazon Go resulted in an untold number of layoffs
March 12, 2025
Amazon is restructuring the corporate teams for its grocery and convenience store brands and laying off some employees who work on their Amazon Fresh and Amazon Go chains, the online retailer confirmed.
“We regularly review our team structures to ensure we’re best set up to serve customers. Following a recent review, we’ve identified a very small number of roles in the Worldwide Grocery Stores org that are no longer required. We’ve already notified employees whose roles are impacted, and we’re committed to supporting them through their transition,” an Amazon spokesperson said in an email to Supermarket News on Wednesday.
Amazon operates more than a dozen Amazon Go stores across the Seattle, Chicago, New York City, and Los Angeles areas. The Seattle-based online giant also operates 63 Amazon Fresh Grocery stores across the U.S., as of Feb. 15, according to ScrapeHero.com.
Employees who leave the company will receive a severance offer and access to career transition services, as well as 60 days of pay and benefits and access to transitional health benefits.
It’s unclear how many employees were laid off in the restructuring.
The corporate shakeup comes about a month-and-a-half after Whole Foods Market CEO Jason Buechel was named to lead Amazon’s Worldwide Grocery Stores organization, which was established in 2022.
Claire Peters leads the online retailer’s Amazon Fresh, Amazon Go, and Grocery Partnerships business.
“This expanded responsibility gives me an opportunity to look after the collective grocery offering across Amazon Fresh, Whole Foods Market, Amazon Go and Grocery Partnerships,” Buechel said in a LinkedIn post in late January. “And help move forward our goal of making grocery shopping simpler, faster, and more affordable for customers.”
Amazon’s grocery business has been in a constant state of change for several years now, the most recent major update being the launch of its newest concept, Amazon Grocery, in Chicago in October.
“Customers shopping at Whole Foods Market today are looking for natural and organic products. However, we know that many of them also visit additional stores to grab their favorite national grocery brands or household essentials to complete their weekly shop,” Amazon said in a prepared statement in October. “Through Amazon.com, Amazon Fresh, Amazon Go, Whole Foods Market, third-party grocery partners, and this new shopping experience, we offer a wide selection of national and local brands plus fresh, high-quality produce, meat, and seafood.”
