The stage is set for the conduct of sports competitions for MLAs and MLCs at Indira Gandhi Municipal Corporation (IGMC) Stadium in Vijayawada from March 18, Tuesday.
The event, being organised by the Sports Authority of Andhra Pradesh (SAAP), will have 13 games, including cricket, table tennis, badminton, carroms, Tennikoit, volley ball, throwball, and tug of war. More will be added to the list depending on the demand, as per SAAP officials.
Inspecting the arrangements at the stadium on Monday, along with MLAs Adireddy Srinivas, Bojjala Venkata Sudhir Reddy, Sundarapu Vijay Kumar, P.G.V.R. Naidu, MLCs Kancharla Srikanth and others, SAAP Chairman A. Ravi Naidu said the government decided to organise sports events for the legislators so that they could unwind themselves for a while from their busy schedules.
On the direction of Assembly Speaker Ch. Ayyanna Patrudu and Sports Minister M. Ramprasad Reddy, a special committee with MLAs and MLCs was formed to oversee the conduct of the event. Mr. Ravi Naidu said the committee had been monitoring the arrangements for the past 10 days.
The winners would be announced and awards would be presented on March 20. As per information, so far 98 MLAs and MLCs have given their names to participate in the competitions, which would begin at 3 or 4 p.m. and go on till 8 or 9 p.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday.
The Vijayawada Municipal Corporation readied and levelled the cricket ground, set up 20 temporary toilets, while the other arrangements are being taken care of by SAAP.
The event is not open to the public.
