The National Sports Center for the Disabled has announced a full season of events for a wide range of participants, from children trying skiing for the first time to Paralympians competing in races.
The sports center offers private, family and group lessons in a variety of adaptive methods, including Alpine skiing, snowboarding, ski biking, Nordic skiing and snowshoeing.
The downhill adventures are offered through Winter Park Resort’s Ski & Ride School, where prices vary. For an alternative to downhill sports, the sports center offers Nordic skiing at Devil’s Thumb Ranch, where a half-day is $35 and a full day is $60.
This camp for people with spinal cord injuries, including spina bifida, is held Jan. 17-19 and Feb. 14-16 at Winter Park Resort. The cost is $150 and includes transportation from Denver, and lodging and meals at YMCA of the Rockies Snow Mountain Ranch.
This children’s camp from Feb. 15-17 is open to kids ages 8 and older with developmental and intellectual disabilities. Participants can stand ski, sit ski or snowboard at Winter Park Resort. The program costs $360.
This race series is celebrating its 49th year at Winter Park Resort. The competition from Feb. 20-22 raises funds for adaptive athletes as well as the sports center, where many of the athletes train.
The event includes four races — Corporate Challenge, Kids Snowplow Sprint, AEC Challenge and World Disabled Invitational — and the Snow Boot Soiree, a fundraiser with music, food, drinks, dancing and a live auction.
The March 22 event has a $75 registration fee, which includes a lift pass, and a $150 fundraising minimum. The event concludes with an apres-ski party and prizes for winners.
For more information or to register for any of these programs, call 303-515-6723 or go to NSCD.org. Financial support may be available.
