➜ 1. Congrats to Kenta Miyoshi, Tyler Bowers and Zach Viiala of the Illinois men’s tennis team. Miyoshi plays Friday in the singles quarterfinals of the Paine Schwartz Champaign Challenger taking place at Atkins Tennis Center in Urbana, while Bowers and Viiala advanced Thursday into the doubles semifinals.
➜ 2. Congrats to the Parkland volleyball team. The Cobras (48-2) will play in their 19th NJCAA D-II national tournament since 1999 starting next Wednesday night in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
➜ 3. Congrats to Jacob Chase of the Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley football team and Ella Schluter of the Cissna Park volleyball team. The duo won this week’s high school Athletes of the Week.

yards the Michigan State football team is averaging this season coming into Saturday’s game against Illinois at Memorial Stadium in Champaign. That ranks just 104th in the country and 14th in the Big Ten. A reason why the Illini could get their sixth home win of the season — which hasn’t happened since 2001 — in their final home game.

Three events I’m paying attention to
➜ 1. Michigan State at Illinois football. A 10-win season is still possible for the Illini. Of course, that means four straight wins, starting at 1:30 p.m. Saturday in Champaign against the struggling Spartans.
➜ 2. Alabama at Illinois men’s basketball. Next Wednesday night’s 8 p.m. tip from Birmingham, Ala., is still more than a week away from Thanksgiving. But getting a shot at the No. 2 Crimson Tide this early is a good litmus test to see how much potential these Illini have.
➜ 3. Illinois at Purdue volleyball. Two days after the Illini play at No. 4 Penn State on Friday night, another Top 10 opponent awaits at 4 p.m. Sunday when the eighth-ranked Boilermakers (21-5) host the Illini.
From left, the Hamilton family: Lauren, Anna, Scott, Kim, Taylor and Brian Murphy.
Three questions with Unity football coach Scott Hamilton before his Rockets host Nashville at 2 p.m. Saturday in a Class 3A quarterfinal game:
➜ 1. My favorite sports team is … the St. Louis Blues.
➜ 2. Three coaches I’d like to have dinner with are … Charlie Raich, Ric Johns and Dick Duval.
➜ 3. My biggest pet peeve is … when I tell my own kids, kids at school or my football players something and they say, ‘Yeah, I know.’ If you know, then why didn’t you do it?
