THAYER, Mo. (KAIT) – The town of Thayer is ready to play ball.
City leaders announced Monday that the town of 2,000 people will soon be home to a new sports complex.
It will be located at the former River Country Chevrolet Dealership on the north side of town.
The lot closed in February 2020. Since then, the chamber of commerce has searched for a buyer.
“It’s a great location—one of the prime spots in town—a great facility, but we never could close the deal,” said Chamber President Scott Cecil.
But recently, with the help of a local real estate office, the building sold.
“We’ve shown several people, and it just didn’t work out, but this time it did, and it’s going to be great,” said Mindy Lawrence, an agent with Ozarks United Country Realty.
According to a Monday news release, Myrtle Rigel and Family are the new owners.
“We are thrilled to bring this sports complex to Thayer, Missouri,” said Myrtle Rigel. “Our vision is to provide a place where families, athletes, and community members can come together to enjoy a wide range of sports and recreational activities.”
Many who live in Thayer can’t wait.
“I’m big into travel basketball with my own kids, and we travel two to three hours almost every weekend,” Blake Horton said.
“Great for kids to have something to do, and great for our community,” Zach Horton added. “It’s something we’ve needed for a long time.”
According to the news release, the complex will host “top of the line” facilities in a 30,000-square-foot building.
Work on the new building is expected to begin soon.
