Not Thalaivar 171, Rajinikanth’s upcoming film is titled Coolie.
Rajinikanth starrer Coolie has dropped its first teaser trailer. Earlier called Thalaivar 171, the makers also announced its finalised title along with the teaser which pays homage to Rajinikanth’s iconic roles as a coolie in films like Uzhaipaali (1993), Mannan (1992), and Mullum Malarum (1978).
Directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, the film’s teaser draws a picture of Rajinikanth’s illustrious career. The teaser also features a special moment of Rajinikanth singing “Siva Sambo” from Ninaithale Inikkum (1979), a song that reflects on a lifestyle that his character in Coolie swears by.
Lokesh, a master storyteller, had earlier refuted rumours that this film would be a part of the cinematic universe of Vikram, Kaithi and Leo. Pegging this to be different from anything he’s undertaken, the director revealed that Coolie will be his third standalone movie in his filmography after Maanagaram and Master.
Lokesh had earlier teased Rajini’s film Coolie last month with the first-look poster of Thalaiva. The poster features a monochromatic image of Rajinikanth sporting a denim shirt. His character wears a lot of wristwatches.

After the poster made its rounds on the internet, speculative fans started a thread on a possible time-travel narrative that the film likely explores. Sharing the poster on X, Lokesh Kanagaraj announced that the film’s title will be unveiled on April 22. He wrote, “#Thalaivar171TitleReveal on April 22.”

There is no other update on the film Coolie. Makers have even kept the names of others in the cast under wraps.
The film is produced by Sun Pictures.
As for other projects, Rajinikanth is also engaged in a film with TJ Gnanavel titled Vettaiyan, slated for release later this year.
