CROOKSTON, Minn. — The University of Minnesota Crookston has launched a sports media and communication degree program.
The degree, offered as a major and minor under the Humanities, Social Sciences and Education Department, combines a “strong foundation in media, communication and digital technologies with a deep understanding of sports culture, providing students with the skills necessary to excel in sports journalism, broadcasting, public relations and content creation,” said a press release announcing the program.

“This innovative offering reflects the university’s commitment to meeting the demands of an increasingly dynamic field and helping students achieve success in a wide range of sport-related careers,” the release said.
The program will be available on campus and online, and will focus on helping students with interviewing, editing, storytelling and audio and multimedia production. Public relations and marketing communication strategies, as well as presentation and technology skills, will be part of the program. The release listed sports writer, sports research and analyst and media specialist as possible careers for students who take the program.
Megan Bell, associate professor of communication, said the university is excited to provide an opportunity for sports-enthused students to find work in the field regardless of athletic ability.
“Enjoying sports and having a desire to communicate about them has the potential to make this program a great fit for athletes and non-athletes alike,” she said in the release.
UMC’s decision to start its sports media and communication program continues a trend of journalism and communications news in the region.
In early 2024, the University of North Dakota announced the return of its journalism degree program, following approval from the State Board of Higher Education.
