HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Hawaii Pacific University’s new Las Vegas campus hosted HPU Oahu students for an exclusive study-away course earlier this month.
The newly designed facility in the Southwestern are of the 9th island supports HPU’s Doctor of Occupational Therapy (OTD) and Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) programs.
With its proximity to some of the nation’s state-of-the-art sports facilities such as the UFC headquarters and Allegiant Stadium, HPU officials said the Vegas location served as a perfect place for a sports management study-away course.
18 HPU students participated in the course from Mar. 3, until Mar. 9, and gained firsthand insight into sports management field professionals.
The selected students were either part of HPU’s Ho‘oko Rising Scholars program, or formal dual-credit program high school students who are completing their bachelor’s degrees at HPU.
The opportunity was funded by an anonymous donor and Southwest Airlines.
The course kicked off with guest lecturer from Villanova University, Professor Andrew Brandt.
Not only is Brandt a recognized expert in sports law and professional sports management, but he also served as the vice president for the Green Bay Packers from 1999 until 2008.
Students learned about historical NCAA changes, as well as how to navigate a career through the often unpredictable industry.
The Nevada campus opened in February in honor of HPU’s 60th anniversary.
