CHICO, Calif. – Known for its thriving art scene and colorful murals, Chico is set to host a street fair this weekend that will not only add more vibrant artwork to the city but also celebrate the talent behind it.
Four top muralists are competing in the event, each transforming blank walls along Orange Street into striking works of art. The competition, held as part of an art festival organized by Maker Radio 94.5 FM, will allow attendees to vote for their favorite mural, with the winner receiving a $500 prize.
Dylan Tellesen, one of the participating artists, is putting the finishing touches on his mural titled Pulling Your Eyes Out.
“You know, sometimes people are frustrated and don’t know what to do with the state of the world, so you’ve got to pull your eyes out sometimes,” Tellesen said.
While each artist brings their own unique style, one name stands out among the competitors: Shane Grammer, who gained national recognition for his artwork following the Paradise Camp Fire and is now bringing his talent to Orange Street with his piece, Robinhood.
Behind the artwork, the event is set to be a lively festival featuring live music, comedy performances, art galleries, and local artists showcasing their work.
“Our whole goal is to create opportunities for artists and creative folks to have a platform to show what they do and share their talents,” said Erin Banwell of Maker Radio 94.5 FM.
Tellesen emphasized the importance of public art, noting that murals make art accessible to everyone.
“I think public art is important. I think it’s for everybody. You don’t have to pay an admission fee or feel like you have to belong to enjoy it. So more public art, please, for everybody,” he said.
The event will take place on Orange Street between 6th and 7th Streets, which will be closed from noon to 10 p.m. on Saturday. Organizers anticipate a crowd of around 1,000 attendees.
