The owner of Noble Steel says since the tariffs went into effect, the biggest change he’s made his implementing a hard deadline on customer’s estimates.
CHICO, Calif. – Local businesses are starting to feel the impact of the new tariffs in place under president Donald Trump. A 25% tariff was placed on imported steel and aluminum this month.
“From everything I’m hearing from everyone that I buy steel from, it’s expected to keep going up,” said owner of Noble Steel Josh Noble.
Noble started his company back in May of last year, and the company has been gaining traction. The company does a variety of projects, but is known for building outdoor shade structures.
However, with the new tariffs on imported steel, Noble says the business is starting to see a slowdown, but it’s still growing.
“It’s been a change. It’s been a shift. It’s slowing down a little bit, but overall, it’s still it’s still going pretty good,” Noble said.
The US International Trade Administration says nearly a quarter of steel imports and over half of aluminum imports that come to The US are from Canada. Noble says he gets his supplies from all over the world.
“A lot of a lot of the I-beams and stuff is domestic. It’s a domestic product. The tubing stuff mostly comes either from Vietnam or Korea,” Noble said. “My suppliers send me increased letters, and I’ve been getting them every week now. So they’ve been they’ve been actively raising prices.”
Noble says while the business is starting to feel the impacts of the tariffs, he’s not against them. But he would have liked them to take effect gradually so businesses would have more time to adjust to the price increases.
“I believe it’s gonna influence, a lot of manufacturing domestically. That will be something that will benefit us in the long run. But it’s also, like, if there I think that if there are too many too many tariffs too quick, it’s gonna actually halt projects, and it will actually slow down the economy instead of helping us to where we need to go,” Noble said.
Noble says due to the tariffs, the biggest change he made to his business was implementing deadlines on customers’ estimates. Obviously, this can vary for other local steel fabrications and distributors depending where they get their supplies imported from.
Noble says if you do plan to do a project involving steel this year, he says it’s best to get started now, get an estimate as soon as possible.
Canada is issuing reciprocal dollar for dollar tariffs on US steel and aluminum imports in response to president Trump’s twenty five percent tariffs on all steel and aluminum.
