Trying to portray party unity, prominent New York Democrats showed strong support Tuesday for Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer.
When asked about Schumer, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries told Spectrum News, “We had a good conversation about the path forward.”
Schumer placed a controversial vote last week, advancing a Republican-backed spending bill to avoid a government shutdown. Schumer’s vote drew praise from President Donald Trump and prompted a swift backlash from many fellow Democrats.
Facing outrage and protest over his vote, Schumer postponed several stops on a book tour, but did sit down with the hosts of “The View” on ABC Tuesday morning.
The highest-ranking Democrat in the Senate stood by his vote, telling the show’s hosts a government shutdown would have allowed President Trump to make extreme cuts.
In a press briefing, Gov. Kathy Hochul dismissed calls for Schumer to step down from Senate leadership, saying Schumer has a record of delivering for New York State, “I don’t want to lose that clout,” Hochul said.
