BURNSVILLE, Minn. — Wayne State infielder and 2021 Marshall High School graduate Chase Douglas was named the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference’s Player of the Week on Monday after contributing to six wins for the Wildcats last week.
Over the course of Wayne State’s four-game sweep of Bemidji Sweep and additional wins over Wayne State (Mich.) and Ohio Dominican, Douglas racked up a .579 batting average in 19 at-bats with 10 runs and six stolen bases. Douglas also homered in the Wildcats’ 11-1 win over Wayne State (Mich.) on March 10 and went yard again in their 19-1 win over Bemidji State on Friday.
At the time of print, Douglas’ 13 stolen bases this season rank second in the NSIC.
A pair of Southwest Minnesota State University Mustangs were also honored in the NSIC’s weekly release. Outfielder Levi Lampert was listed among the conference’s other top performances from a position player, while Carter Petron was named as one of the conference’s other top performances from a pitcher.
Lampert reached base in each of the Mustangs’ seven games last week, batting .308 with a home run and six walks. He put together a 1.018 OPS over the course of the week.
Petron threw six shutout innings for SMSU with a season-high eight strikeouts in a 5-0 win over St. Cloud State on Sunday. He also limited the Huskies to 3 hits during his time on the mound.
The win for Petron snapped an 11-game head-to-head losing streak for SMSU against St. Cloud State. It was also SMSU’s lone win over the Huskies in a four-game series at US Bank Stadium in Minneapolis.
Chase Douglas and Wayne State are currently 9-8 on the season and will next compete on Saturday at noon when they kick off a four-game series against Minot State.
SMSU is next sltaed to host a four-game series against Bemidji State for its home opener at Legion Field on Saturday. First pitch of the first game is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
