Staff writer Scott Richey with a look at what’s going on around the area:
Georgia Tech football team celebrates with the trophy after a 24-21 win against No. 10 Florida State Seminoles on Saturday in the Aer Lingus College Football Classic game at Aviva Stadium in Dublin, Ireland.
➜ 1. College football is back. For a school that so desperately wants out of the ACC, No. 10 Florida State didn’t do itself any favors by losing to Georgia Tech in Ireland. Consider the Seminoles rambling wrecked.
➜ 2. And there’s much more this week. The misnomered “Week 0” saw three of its four games decided by five points or fewer. Here’s hoping the first full week of the season, which includes an 8 p.m. Thursday showdown between Illinois and Eastern Illinois, has just as many interesting games.
➜ 3. Here’s how small the coaching world is. Not only did Illini offensive coordinator Barry Lunney Jr. and EIU coach Chris Wilkerson work on the same staff at San Jose State two decades ago, but Lunney and his wife, Janelle, are godparents to Wilkerson’s son, Peyton, who plays for the Panthers.
Luke Altmyer, left, begins his second season as the Illini’s starting quarterback on Thursday night at home against Eastern Illinois.
Montana State’s win Saturday at New Mexico wasn’t some fluke. The last 10 seasons have seen FCS programs pull 72 upsets when matched with FBS opponents. Illinois has never been on the wrong end of one of those games. EIU has six wins in its history against teams still at the FBS level.
New York Giants quarterback Tommy DeVito (15) runs off the field after the Giants lost to the Los Angeles Rams, 26-25, Sunday, Dec. 31, 2023 in East Rutherford, N.J. DeVito, who started the last few games for the Giants, did not play.
Three events I’m paying attention to …
➜ 1. Normal U-High at Urbana boys’ soccer. The 2024 season kicks off with a doozy with the Tigers hosting last year’s Class 1A state runner-up Pioneers at 6 p.m. on Monday at Randy Blackman Field.
➜ 2. Bismarck-Henning/Rossville-Alvin at Unity volleyball. Kudos to the Blue Devils for not pulling any punches for the opening week of their schedule. Monday’s 6 p.m. match in Tolono will be followed by a Thursday match at St. Joseph-Ogden.
➜ 3. NFL cut day. All 32 NFL teams must have their active rosters at 53 by Tuesday. While the Chicago Bears released former Illinois defensive tackle Keith Randolph Jr. on Saturday, several other Illini are still in the mix to be on Week 1 rosters.
Milford baseball coach Greg DeWerff celebrates with Owen Halpin after the Bearcats won a Class 1A sectional title in 2023.
Three questions with Milford baseball coach Greg DeWerff, whose Bearcats have won five regional titles and a 2023 sectional in his dozen years at the helm:
➜ 1. My favorite sports team is … the St. Louis Cardinals.
➜ 2. Three coaches I’d like to have dinner with are … Milford assistants BJ Bushnell and Darrin Warren and former Nokomis coach Brian Pesko. Very few baseball guys I’d rather spend time with.
➜ 3. My biggest pet peeve is … boring baseball. Players over communicating, aggressive baserunning, pitchers pounding the zone — put those together and exciting baseball is bound to happen.
