Quentin Tarantino says Alec Baldwin is partly responsible for cinematographer Halyna Hutchins’ tragic death on Rust set.
A tragic incident occurred on the set of Rust in New Mexico on October 21, 2021. During rehearsals, Alec Baldwin discharged a prop gun, which unexpectedly contained live ammunition. The bullet ended up killing cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and injuring director Joel Souza.
In a recent episode of Bill Maher’s Club Random podcast, director Quentin Tarantino made some controversial remarks regarding the fatal shooting of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the movie set.
Tarantino asserted that, while Alec Baldwin is not entirely at fault for the tragic incident, he does share some of the responsibility.
While Maher expressed disbelief at Baldwin facing charges in connection with Hutchins’ death, Tarantino offered a different perspective. While he placed the majority of the blame on the film’s armourer, he added that Baldwin should bear some responsibility since he was handling the weapon.
He said, “It’s a situation, I think I’m being fair enough to say, that the armourer — the guy who handles the gun — is 90% responsible for everything that happens when it comes to that gun… but but but but but…. the actor is 10% responsible.”

Tarantino also said that actors should check their weapons before using them in scenes. His statement, however, contradicts the official stance of SAG-AFTRA, which previously stated that it is not an actor’s responsibility to inspect weapons before scenes.
The shooting incident led to Baldwin facing a manslaughter charge. However, the charge was dismissed in July 2023 after it was revealed that prosecutors had improperly handled key evidence.
After the dismissal, Baldwin filed a lawsuit against Special Prosecutor Kari Morrissey and Santa Fe County Sheriff Adan Mendoza, alleging misconduct in the investigation.
