GREEN BAY, Wis. (WKOW) – Kate McGinnis scored 14 first half points to lead Kimberly to the Division 1 State Championship game at the WIAA Girls State Basketball Tournament in Green Bay.
She started with a jumper in the paint to get things going for the Papermakers.
A free throw by Ella Jazdzewski briefly gave the Patriots the lead at 3-2 before a layup by Haylie Dulas put Kimberly back out in front.
They remained there for the rest of the half for a 30-17 lead at the break. It was their largest lead of the half.
McGinnis scored the final five points in the half with a three and two free throws.
Appleton East came out firing to start the second half with five straight points to cut the lead to eight with 17 minutes left.
A Lilly Meulemans hoop at the 14:47 for the Patriots signaled the start of a five minute drought for a basket.
Before it ended with a layup from Torie Neubauer, the Papermakers built a 19 point lead behind scoring from Ava Van Vonderen, Krueger, Dulas, and McGinnis.
With 4:27 left, Kimberly went up 20 at 50-30 off a Dulas layup. They continued to pull away the rest of the way.
Four players finished in double figures for Kimberly. McGinnis had 17, Van Vonderen 14, Dulas 10, and Krueger 10.
Ella Jazdzewski had 10 for Appleton East.
Kimberly now faces the winner of the Arrowhead/Muskego game on Saturday night for the Division 1 state title.
