Pennsdale, Pa. — An anchor store at the District at Lycoming Valley, the former Lycoming Mall in Muncy Township, is closing its doors soon.
Store closing signs were seen this week at Burlington, the last remaining retail store at the former mall. Lycoming Mall has been closed since February 2023.
A store associate on Tuesday could not confirm the store’s last day and referred a reporter to their corporate office for information. As of Thursday, NorthcentralPa.com had not received a return call from the corporate office.
In June 2023, the 135-acre former mall property was purchased by developers Famvest Partners of State College, who announced plans to turn the mall into a residential mixed use center. Famvest received state and county level funding to assist with purchasing the mall for $15 million and renamed the complex District at Lycoming Valley.
So far, apart from the movie theater reopening last year, there has not been much in the way of visible movement regarding transformation of the former mall.
Gwen Pidcoe, secretary for Muncy Township, said she has not heard anything recent regarding redevelopment. “Nothing has come across my desk.”
A NorthcentralPa.com reporter reached out to a public relations representative for Famvest for an update, but did not immediately hear back.
The last public update came in September when Famvest issued a statement indicating they were in talks with large retailers.“Famvest continues to have discussions with potential tenants, and attracting the right commercial and large retail tenants for the property remains the primary focus for development,” the statement read. “Redevelopment of this magnitude takes significant thought, planning, and design and will be impacted by the type of tenant that comes to the property.”
No word yet as to which retailers Famvest has been in talks with. The developers have previously said they will not release the names of potential tenants until a lease is signed.
The closure of Burlington will mark the end of an era for an anchor space that has always had a store since the mall opened in 1978. Initially, Gee Bee department store was in the space. In the 1990s, Value City would take over the space but would close by 2008 making way for Burlington to move in. Burlington was able to remain open after the mall closed due to have external entrance doors.
One of the former mall’s outparcel lots also is recently vacant, as Big Lots had its last day of business on Thursday, March 13. The store had been in liquidation since December, when Big Lots announced they were closing all stores.
