Buffalo mayoral candidate Sean Ryan on Friday unveiled his fiscal plan for the city if elected.
Ryan, a Democrat and current state senator from the 61st District, says the city faces a deep crisis due to irresponsible budgets that he said “kicked the can down the road.”
"Vital city services and programs are facing cuts, and homeowners are facing rising taxes," Ryan said in part in a statement. "It doesn’t have to be this way, but we can’t fight this fight in the rearview mirror. We are dealing with a fiscal crisis and need to fix it. I want to stabilize city finances, rebuild our reserves, and improve vital city services.”
His plan includes bringing the state comptroller in to conduct a full audit, partnering with the state to improve efficiency, eliminating duplicative services, cracking down on cronyism, and detailed reporting of the use of state and federal funds.
"We have a once-in-a-generation opportunity to change path in the city of Buffalo,” said Ryan. “I want to stabilize the city’s finances, rebuild our reserves and improve our vital city resources."
Ryan, endorsed by Erie County Democrats, is one of many in the mayoral race. His Democratic opponents include Acting Mayor Chris Scanlon, former fire commissioner Garnell Whitfield and Common Councilmember Rasheed Wyatt.
James Gardner, who has been endorsed by the Buffalo Republican Executive Committee, is also vying for the seat.
Primary Day is June 24.
