MADISON (WKOW) — A new bill seeking co-sponsorship among state lawmakers would eliminate daylight saving time in Wisconsin.
A co-sponsorship from the bill’s authors Rep. Nate Gustafson (R-Fox Crossing) and Sen. Rachael Cabral-Guevara (R-Appleton) said “this bill seeks to eliminate the practice of DST in Wisconsin, establishing a consistent standard time throughout the year. By ending twice a year time changes, this bill aims to promote public health, safety, and economic stability.”
Eliminating daylight saving time in Wisconsin would mean the state would experience earlier sunrises and sunsets year-round.
Daylight saving time begins at 2 a.m. on the second Sunday in March and ends at 2 a.m. on the first Sunday in November every year.
Federal law usually controls time changes, but it allows states like Wisconsin, which are entirely in one time zone, to choose to stay on standard time all year.
After he was elected but before President Donald Trump took office for his second term, he said the Republican Party would attempt to eliminate daylight saving time. Senior adviser to the president Elon Musk who has been credited with leading the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has also suggested ending time changes. Neither have taken action on the measure.
Republicans in Congress introduced legislation in January to end the time change. The Sunshine Protection Act would make daylight saving time the year-round standard, which would mean there would be later sunrises and sunsets.
Currently, Arizona and Hawaii are the only states that do not change their clocks. They remain on standard time year-round.
