
Whatcom County’s standout high school basketball players were honored in the All-Conference selections made yesterday.
Lynden High School dominated the awards, with senior Brant Heppner and sophomore Finley Parcher each earning Northwest Conference Player of the Year on the boys and girls sides.
Lynden coach Rob Adams was also named Head Coach of the Year on the girls side after leading his Lions to an undefeated season where they repeated as 2A state champs.
Meridian’s Talon Jenkins and Jaeger Fyfe joined Nooksack Valley’s Caden Heutink and Lynden Christian’s Gannon Dykstra on the All-Conference 1st Team for boys.
And LC’s trio of Ella Fritts, Danya Dykstra and Allison Shumate accompanied Lynden’s Payton Mills, Mount Baker’s Rebeca Soares and Nooksack Valley’s Grace DeHoog on the 1st team for girls.
Meanwhile, Lummi Nation cleaned up in the Northwest League awards for Class 1B.
Junior Jerome Toby and sophomore Jemma James each earned Player of the Year.
Dyson Edwards, Ailina Rabang and Kashyln Mack all garnered 1st Team recognition as well.
Speaking of postseason honors, a former Lynden Christian standout just earned a major award.
University of Wyoming senior guard and 2021 LC graduate Emily Mellema has been named Defensive Player of the Year in the Mountain West Conference.
Mellema averaged just over 2 steals per game while playing for a stalwart Wyoming defense that placed second in the Mountain West.
She helped lead the Lyncs to a pair of state championships in 2018 and 2020 before going Division 1 with the Cowgirls.
The Seahawks have made a move to bolster their offensive line.
The NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports that the team signed former Baltimore Ravens backup tackle Josh Jones to a 1-year deal worth up to $4.75 million.
The 27-year-old has made 24 starts over his five-year career in the NFL.
He’ll look to give the Seahawks depth in the trenches after the team released veteran backup tackle George Fant last week to free up cap room.
