It’s been exactly one year since sports betting became legal across our state.
“I can tell you that business has been very good there,” said DraftKings Race and Sportsbook Operations Director Johnny Avello.

Avello has been in the gaming industry since the late seventies. He’s now the director of race and sportsbook operations for DraftKings, an American gambling company based out of Boston.
“Football is a big betting sport everywhere—so football is the biggest in all states we do,” Avello said. “But when it comes to basketball, especially college basketball, North Carolina knows it well and has teams that perform well that they follow– so that’s one of the bigger sports for the state.”

Gamblers across the state have wagered more than $6.6 billion in paid wagers in the last year, since sports betting became legal.
“It’s not the biggest state– because it doesn’t have the amount of people other states have,” Avello said. “But it’s right there in the mix of the center of everything that goes on in the Draft Kings world.”

The anniversary of its legality in North Carolina comes amid the beginning of March Madness– a popular time for people across our state to place their bets as the sports betting business continues to boom.
“This is a big deal– a big week,” said Avello. “So sportsbook basketball aficionados are chomping at the bit for this week to come– and it leads us to a chance to win a national title in the next three weeks.”

In all, North Carolina bettors have been paid around $5.8 billion in winnings.
